This isn't for me. A friend lives in a very remote part of scotland and has some great dark sky and aurora opportunities. He asked me for a recommendation for a camera set up that he could leave outside to 'video' the night sky. Actual traditional video of the night sky is obviously very challenging so I've steered him more down the route of doing interval shooting and time lapse etc but have warned there will be a lot to learn.

This is one of those things where I know exactly what I would do with my own set up but when recommending stuff for someone starting from scratch in terms of equipment and learning curve, it's much harder.

If we assumed a budget of about £500 to cover a lens and body, used is absolutely fine. DSLR or Mirrorless options on the table. Tripod sounds like it's covered. I suspect he might need to consider battery set up and maybe even lens heating etc but I guess some of that stuff could come later.

Putting the learning aspect (and indeed software etc) to one side for now, I would personally be gravitating first to a fast wide lens and the body might be a secondary consideration.

Preference is probably for a canon set up as his other half used to shoot a canon DSLR so there is a at least a bit of a head start there but I don't think that is set in stone.

Suggestions gratefully received.
