Camera life expectancy?

What's the general life expectancy of a camera before the shutter (or any other parts) starts to get worn out?
I read some thread on here about someone asking about a used 20D, and something about that particular body had a shutter expectancy of about 50k pics?

Is there any way of knowing, or is it all hit and miss?

The shutter life expectancy is a "mean" figure, and varies from camera model to model. The more "pro" the camera, then generally the longer shutter life.

However all a mean figure tells you, is that it should last to this amount but, some will fail before this, and some after.

there was a similar thread about shutter count a few days back.
Its hit and miss really.

There;s a website somewhere which has the statistics. But allot of cameras fail long before their expected life (usually around 100,000 clicks for amateur level bodies) and allot of cameras fail well after this figure.

Its a good indication as to how much the cameras been used, but as to its remaining life its not accurate.

The only parts that really fail on cameras are the mechanical parts, which have physical wear and tear, which includes the shutter and mirror assembly.

It's all hit and miss. I've seen a dead Nikon D300 with under 3000 actuations on it, when in theory it should last until 150,000. I also know of someone with a Canon 20d with over 250k on it, which according to the data should have died a long time ago....

Ah, cheers. I found a general overview of shutter expectancy on dpreview...

This issue never comes up with film cameras: I have a 25 year old Nikon F3 which is fine; a 38 year old Nikon F2-AS which is also fine. Look in the Film section - lots of us are using 40, 50 and 60 year old cameras with very few issues.

With DSLRs they were usually rendered obsolete by advances in technology long before they wore out.

Having said that the current crop of high-end DSLRs look to be future proof for at least 5 years, which is nice...

Shutters can be replaced.. in fact I today ordered a replacement shutter for my dead 40D, for a cost of $54 from a reputable Canon spares dealer.

Anybody want to replace it for me (I'll pay of course) before I get my tools out? :D I do have the 40D service & repair manual fortunately!

Local Canon service here in Finland wants 300+ for the replacement..
