I own a canon 1000d , tamron 70-300, nifty fifty and sigma 170-500 would my best way to better quality images be higher quality lens or upgrade to say a 50d

The first question is what don't you like about what you have and have you found you are at the limits of your equipment?

My best results have come from my tamron and i`m after a better quality image and just wondered what was the best route to take , i appreciate better glass would help but also what about camera? i know i will need to spend money and more than i`d like but i only want to do it once if you know what i mean, Harvey

For generic "better image quality" lenses are really the best option.

That said, I'm curious that you say your best shots come from the Tamron as (assuming it's not the VC) it really is a pretty crappy lens (sorry).

I know the tamron isn't the best and it isn't the vc version but they seem a better quality of course conditions are also a factor

I guess it would be easier to understand if we could see some of the images you want to improve.

Image quality is a very subjective thing. You've got ISO noise to consider (Camera) and also the sharpness (Camera or Lens) and of course the most common reason for lower image quality - the photographer.

If you are 100% sure your technique cannot be improved then it is time to look at equipment.

How is your image qualit with the 50mm F1.8? This is the sharpest lens you own so a good one to determine if you want more from camera or lens.

To be honest I never really use the 1.8 50mm , I will try to put some images up when I connect the external hd again (it's the wifes)

5 main issues can cause poor images:

1) light. No camera or lens will help - you have to adjust to it or adjust it.
2) user error in any other way
3) incorrectly focused - could be an issue with the lens, body or the user
4) poor optics
5) body cannot handle those conditions well (high iso noise, locking focus on difficult subjects)

We don't know about 1-3 - ideally some examples would clarify the situation;
4 - you would certainly need so better glass to improve the output; 1000D is fairly capable body - but could reach its limits quickly when pushed hard (not sure that is the case here)

As you seem to be into the long lens territory, you could have a think about canon 70-200mm f/4 L USM, and / or 100-400 or 300/400mm prime + 1.4tc.

I certainly wontclaim to have the perfect technical ability but better equipment would certainly help

shooting raw helps as well because you can underexpose if needed and recover the image :)

weigh it up and take alot of consideration. like previously mentioned be sure what you want to use your camera for and whether or not your current camera body is up to the job and the owner :)

I chose body over glass and to be honest i have noticed a big difference but i took a biggish step with camera bodies and worked out what i wanted the camera for and my original wasnt quite what i originally wanted. I am a nikon man myself too but the advice is the same.

Another bit of advice i learnt was dont sell yourself short and save up to buy what you want, worth it in the long run
