camera sensor cleaning

Hi All

since I've owned my camera, I've never cleaned the sensor.

is there a way to do it? nikon d7000.

Hi

You can have a shop do it or do it yourself...

If you do it yourself there are basically 2 ways - "dry" clean or "wet" clean

I've a Lenspen SensorKlear which I have used and works for me. This is a "dry" clean - I've not really fancied doing a "wet" clean and the Lenspen works for me.

Silly question, forgive me, but does it really need it? Have you spots visible in your images?

I've an EOS 5D and I've never cleaned its sensor in 9 years. I've often used a blower brush with the brush removed and that does the trick.

Sam, ideally no. the spots don't show in pics, but they do show through the view finder. does my head in.

That'll be the mirror or the screen then - more than likely the screen. NOT the sensor.

Yup, the dust or whatever it is will be on the mirror, the focusing screen or in the VF. This is just something you have to live with unless you want to dive into the innards or send it off for a professional clean. Personally I found crap in the VF very annoying and I'd much rather have a spot on my sensor as I found sensor contamination much easier to deal with.

I don't know if the focusing screen can be removed easily, my Canon 20D screen couldn't be easily removed but my 5D screen came out easily. They are easily marked though so take care if cleaning the screen in place or removing it.

Cleaning the sensor is pretty straightforward, but there's no reason to do it unless dust is showing up in the images. It's not a form of maintenance. Dust anywhere else, that's visible in the viewfinder, is a nuisance but I'd just leave it alone or get the camera cleaned professionally if it's driving you to distraction.
