Is the camera sensor the mirror that you see when you take off the lens?? Which a light shines on to??

Ah, never seen that.. Why does the mirror swing up?? Just seen some dust on my mirror and thought that was my sensor.. The dust on the mirror won't matter then?

Dust on the mirror will have zero effect on the picture. Mirror surfaces are ultra fragile. Very easily marked. If a blower does not remove dust from the mirror just leave it.
The mirror swings up to let light passing through the lens reach the sensor (or film) when the shutter is released.

Learn something new every day. Thanks for that info guys. Very helpful :)

Just Googled it :) that mirror is just for the viewfinder!!

Primarily yes, the mirror is just for the viewfinder but there are areas of the mirror (that you can't really see with the naked eye) that are transparent and let light through. Behind those areas are a second mirror (or sometimes small prisms) that reflect the light downwards onto the autofocus elements.

If you go to the Nikon website there is a complete description of how the light that comes through the lens is used, and why.

Have fun :)

This is a cool youtube that shows a shutter firing you see the mirror, thats the bit your seeing flip up out of the way and the shutter curtains expose the sensor. It's the dark green bit at the back.

Should I clean the sensor as a Metternich of course or only when it shows up on a picture
