When viewing cameras,such as Nikon DSLR how does one tell if the camera is european or ???? model. Can this be done via the serial number ?.

From that I can see my secondhand D3 is Japanese. Is this likely to cause me a problem? Is there any real difference apart from the serial number? Don'tr mean to hijack the thread but think this is relevant.

The cameras themselves are the same.

(you MAY get a bit less if you sold or traded it in, depending what the buyer wants, but a D3 is......a D3)
 
I got to thinking about this. If the serial number begins with say, 7, this would be for the Asian market, therefore the in camera instructions etc would be in the Asian language and not English ? .
Or could it be that the serial number indicates where the camera was made but exported for the English market.

I presume each model is made made in the same factory. (can be different locations for different models, same as lenses?) & the code #'s are for the intended sales location/area.

So if they're for English speaking countries, the menu would be presumably pre-set for such.

Not sure how they would be set up for Asia, as there is no `Asian` language. (Maybe Chinese/Mandarin?)

Maybe, other than Japanese, they are all set to English as default?

That thread is re the Nikon D600. I don't know how true it is, and doubt that it's 100% accurate (it would give Nikon distribution headaches) but I have two Nikon cameras here and one begins with a 2 and the other with a 6, both genuine UK purchases.

Some manufacturers clearly brand cameras with different names for different regions, eg Canon xxxD here is Rebel in US and Kiss in Asia.
 
That list has been around for some years Richard, so not sure if they still fully apply, but certainly pre-dates the D 600.

Nikon (OP's question) don't have the same silly `names` as Canon, :lol: so presumably more important to use the prefix #'s to identify regions.
 
I have a D7000 bought brand new from Jessops in December 2012 and the serial number starts with 6.
 
My D700 (from WEX) is a 2 & my D800E (local Wilkinson's camera shop) is a 6 :shrug:
 
Its absolute rubbish, the whole Nikon distribution chain went up in the air after the floods and earthquakes, we got cameras and lenses from wherever we could
