I am me to this and am using a Nikon D3100 camera.

I took some files to be printed today and because of the way my camera is set up apparently I needed to crop my pictures to fit the prints or shrink them to fit.

As they were all landscape shots this was a massive problem. Apparently it is due to the size of the sensor?

Can I change the settings in my camera to prevent this?

Depends what size prints you wanted, you can print 6in x 4in, 9in x 6in or 12in x 8in straight out the camera, as your sensor gives a standard 2:3 format.

Yep the croping depend on the size of the print, you can alway ask them to use the whole of the image, but that will sometime give you white borders :)

Pick the right print size and you'll be ok

The white border or unwanted crop happens when you pick a print size with a different aspect ratio to the sensor. Keep the aspect ratio the same and you're fine.

Otherwise, if you want a different print size it's always better to crop yourself before sending to print. This can be handy for framing because many standard frame sizes don't fit standard sensor aspect ratios.

Understand aspect ratio and it will all become clear..
