Camera Strap - Why its essential - With repair costs now

This is why you should always use a camera strap .... Normally I've got a black rapid or sun sniper round my neck, but as this was just a new cheapo camera I didnt bother.... End result my lens and flash is goosed.

Currently with AJ Johnston in Glasgow for a quote for my insures Adduki.

I am glad I got my new RS W1 at Focus for free! I was using the camera without straps as I dont like the traditional type.
 
accidents happen - you have to be careful with straps too - I had one catch on a door handle and almost wrench the camera out of my hands.
 
What was that - D1 or D1x/D2x? Must have hit pretty damn hard...usually they'll survive quite a bit of abuse...
Not surprised about the 70-200 VR-I though - definitely not one of Nikon's finest in terms of sturdiness...

Indeed- I picked my camera off a table , the next thing I know it's flying through the air and impacts on a hard carpet:eek:. The strap had caught on the corner of the table and wrenched it from my hand- luckily nothing wrong at all- no dents, damage to the lens hood or anything- no padding on that carpet either. Pretty jammy- I'm much more aware now, even though I always thought I was ultra careful:lol:
 
I had a lucky escape yesterday when I changed my lens upstairs. I sat the lens in place whilst I put the rear cap on the one I removed then picked up the camera and head downstairs. As I placed the camera on the sofa the lens it detached from the camera as I'd forgot to lock it is place :bonk:.

Luckily it was completely down on a soft surface when it detached.

my 70-200mm feels like its made like a tank, what other lenses are made much better.
 
Big ouch indeed - not as much as the repair quote though!

SB600 - £261.46 and 70-200 - £1256.92

Up to Aaduki what they do now. But one thing for sure it wont be going back to AJ Johnstone for the repair!

They're having a laugh. You can but the flash new for less than that and the VRII 70-200 for £250 more.... Surely that's beyond economic repair....

I would think so, but I dont know how aaduki work with regards to that. I know the SB700 can be had for £3 more than repairing the 600, and How accurate is my lens going to be if its repaired?

Will keep you updated - Aaduki have said Monday or Tuesday they will get back to me.
 
I sent a Nikon 24-70 VR lens to AJ Johnstone for repair, it had been dropped on its hood and the hood had jammed over the barrel , the zoom sprocket had some broken teeth , the repair was a very reasonable £139 .

Although the sprocket was replaced and the lens worked it was still slightly stiff in places, I thought the barrel had been ovalised but they didnt pick up on that .
Within weeks the rubber zoom grip had come off .

I wasn't totally confident when I phoned them initially either, the guy I spoke to had a less than ideal customer / repairer dialog ....seemed to me he was wanting to get away for lunch " yeah just send it, we'll have a look".
 
If they decide the kit has to be repaired, I will ask for it to go elsewhere as I agree, customer service is very poor. Quote should have been done on Wednesday, the only reason I got them today is I phoned and told them to forget it and that I was coming to collect and send elsewhere, this seemed to work and they had the quote waiting on me.
 
Interesting, goldenstar. I had exactly the same experience, I handed my camera in for an estimate and phoned a few days later to be told that they do their estimate work on a Friday and they'd e-mail me!
A week after I'd handed it in I e-mailed them to ask when they were going to look at it and said I was now wishing I'd used Fixation. Got an e-mail very quickly after that saying they'd send me a quote in the morning. At about 3pm I got the quote. After I'd been revived I phoned them and asked how much it would be just to solve one of the problems - "I'll ask a tech and phone you back".

They never did, so I've decided to stay well away and I'm going with Fixation the next time (hopefully a long way down the road) I need a repair estimate.

Not a happy bunny.

:thumbs: Exactly my experience, If they had been honest in the first place and said it was a friday they did the quotes I'd have been ok with that, and then went to fixation anyway!

Hoever they lied to me 3 times and that just P!55ed me off, so as with you I will never darken their door again.

Shoddy way to run a business, I checked some reviews of them - not many good ones I have to say. I personally think it's a daft day to do estimate work though - if they examine the thing and give the quote out and the customer says go ahead, they can't do a thing till Monday at the earliest - especially if the need parts.

Hope things work out with your gear, I'm not ashamed to admit I'd cry if that happened to my gear!
 
I'd not take anything to AJ either - I'd send it to fixation to get repaired if I ever needed it
 
I had to send my lovely Sigma 17-70 DC lens off to Sigma UK for repair when the focus ring jammed when I was on hoilday.
I was so lucky it was on my last day, what luck !
The repair bill was £63 !
I was tempted to put it towards a replacment 17-70 OS HSM version.
In the end I did have it repaired instead of shelling out for a new lens of £320 !

Not bad, I wont be shelling out though (except for an excess) as its with the insurance now.
 
Kind of off topic but what insurer would you recommend? I tried contacting a few recently when I had more gear to find out what their policy was on old equipment (10D/20D) and they never got back to me.

Ah that makes sense - so in the event of claiming you get the equivalent new? I reckon I put the insurer off because I was asking about claiming before I even had a policy!
