Hullo to all.. newbie to the forum here..

im looking to get back into photography.. just as a hobby.. i had an old Fujifilm S9600 way back.. but obviously its a bit outdated..

i dont want to spend to much.. i dont mind even buying 2nd hand..

looking to pay maybe £250-£300 tops..

what is it i look for in a DSLR camera ? high f-stop ?

i would be mostly into landscapes maybe a bit of macro photography.. also HDR photography interests me.. also to capture the smokey effects on rivers etc

ive found a Nikon 3100 and a 5100 online.. but would just like a few pointers what to look for and what to avoid kinda thing..

thxx in advance !

Hi there,

buying used will be the better choice I think. I would look on wex's used page or london camera exchange as they will have been tested properly rather than an Ebay job.

Have a look at the MPB banner in the top right corner of the thread. You could pick up something like a Canon 50D and 18-55 IS lens for under £300. That would make a great starter kit to get some practice on. The 50D is a really well built camera and will give you some great photos. If you can add an extension tube as well that will really help you out with macro shots as well. Hope this helps.

I would say grab a used Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and a decent body. That would do most of the stuff you wanted to. Macro and blurry river require extra tools. For macro you either buy a extension tube or buy a macro lens, landscrape stuff you need filters. I personal thinks you should look for a body and a lens first and play around before going into other areas.

The Tammy 17-50 is a great inexpensive, versatile lens. If you like Canon the 550D is really good for the money and in Nikon world I think the D5100 offers plenty of features again for the money. I got my boy the D5100 and he is getting some fantasic shots with it straight out of the box even with the 18-55 kit lens.

Other makes exist of course.

Just my £0.02.

thx for all your replys and suggestions.. i like to do reviews and stuff and read peoples comments which i have done and narrowed it down a little...

i have found a Nikon D3300 Brand new for £220 with free delivery but body only comes with 1 year warranty... im clueless to lenses so what do i look for.. is there a certain size to fit many different models ? like whats mentioned above i will start with the basics, so a wide angle lens is 1st on my list..

thx again for your input.. really appreciated !

e2a.. i did check MPB like suggested.. pretty decent site.. but i think i can get cheaper elsewhere..

just noticed the mention of the Tamron will check the prices now..
