Camera tips for Egypt?

Personally I would leave the lighting at home. Definitely take polarized filters.
You won't have to wrap your camera up, just be cautious if you change lenses.

Our base is the resort of Sharm el Sheikh (girlie holiday!), but planning to go on excursions.
I don't own any zoom lenses, so it's just me and my 50mm
Are you able to take pictures in the streets/markets? Just don't want to offend anyone or get into trouble!

Photography is okay but watch out for no-no's like airports, army/police etc or you will fall foul. General touristy and 'local' areas are fine - I can recommend excursions to St Catherine's Monastry (no photos in the Icon Room) and a trip to Cairo, especially the market and the Egyptian Museum (again no photos).
Nabq is generally more windy than 'downtown' Sharm so extra care of dust if you are in that area.
If you haven't been before take advice on taxi fares before you get ripped off!

St Catherines is very good, especially if you take the hike up Mt. Sinai to watch the sun set. Take a torch if you do that. Narrow Canyon is worth a trip if you can manage it and you aren't claustrophobic. Go Snorkelling in the Red Sea, its amazing! Take some warms clothes too, it gets cold at night this time of year. There is a lot to see in the market at Sharm, haggle like mad for everything, even if it seems cheap. Be polite but firm with your answers too.
Have a great time, Egypt really is a very beautiful place, I cant wait to go back.

Egypt is a great place... be aware that everyone wants to sell you something. If they don't have what you need they know someone who has, and they will take you in the other part of the town just to meet that person... When you go to shop, never ask "How much?" Try to show no interest for their products... They will start to offer what they sell for next to the nothing... Stay few more seconds before to accept the deal... Find from internet how much is the average cost of taxi per mile / kilometer. It is really very cheap because the gasoline is probably cheaper than the drinking water and the cars are mostly very old and very bad. Decide yourself how much to give to the driver and at destination come down first from the car, take your luggage and finally give what you want to the driver. 99% he will thank you and that's all. If you stay at a four or five stars hotel, probably the driver will show a great dissatisfaction regarding the payment no matter how much you give to him. In this situation increase with 10% or 20% the amount. If he still is protesting, tell him that you know the average cost per kilometer and if he is not happy you will ask the help of Tourist Police... This is the magic word and he will leave you. Remember, never ask anyone in Egypt "how much" and look as much as indifferent as possible for what they sell even you are interested for that. You will end to pay 10x more otherwise.
When I went in Egypt I considered first that the ancient part is the magic... The reality is that today's Egypt fascinated me. Their culture, their customs, their foods... Cairo is a very nice place for a photographer and I do not mean the touristic part. They have tens of thousands (some says hundred of thousands) people living in cemeteries... There is a huge area inhabited by poor Coptic Christians that are trash collectors and raises pigs in their own houses ( because is a Muslim Country there is no pig farm there but the Coptic minority is a great market for pork meat...) Close to that area there is an open air impressive sanctuary / The Cave Church.... Very nice to visit if you can survive the bad smell when passing through trash collectors district
When going outside typical touristic areas, every woman should have long sleeves, avoiding short pants, short dress, etc, otherwise will be treated as a prostitute or like an offense to their faith. Also for westerners, never ask anything on streets a local women... ask only men on the street, but better don't ask anyone... Or ask a policemen, they are everywhere and are quite friendly.
Take your camera and your lens with no fear... the dust is not as bad there... I met much worser places... And Egypt is a great source of inspiration for a photographer. Have a great time!
