Arghh not sure what to do.

Currently have a 400D with grip, which I have been offered £250 for. So firstly is this price about right?

Secondly, what do I buy! I have a 17-85mm and 50mm nifty lens which I was going to keep.

I would have around £250 to add to this, so a camera for £500.

I was considering the 50D or 550D (second hand) but am Im now considering a lighting setup and sticking with the 400D. Although I dont have space to set up the lighting and a background at home so would be hiring a studio which tend to have flash setups available anyway I think. Really don't know what to do. Im still a novice so not sure whether the jump to the 50D/550D would be a bit lost on me.

Im more in to my portraits and glamour photography, never really do landscapes or sports.

I'd say go for a 50d :P
Just got mine as you know and i love it.
Definately not too much of a step up, just what I needed :)
Got mine on ebay for £430, which is pretty good, mint conidtion.
Others will say keep the 400d and get some good glass.
 
I'd keep the camera and replace the 17-85mm. I had one of those and although the range, IS and USM are nice the distortion and f4 aren't. I ditched mine for a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

can I ask what condition the camera was in, was it supplied in the box with all the bits.

To the OP, I would go for the better cam, there is a world of difference in the XX series compared to the 400D
 
Well I went for the 550D... cant help feeling I made the wrong choice :(
 
Definitely should have gone along the 50d route.

I went 400d to 50d and havnt looked back (as much as I loved my trusted 400d).
 
Ok so I have the opportunity to swap my 550D for a 50D.......am I going to miss the video... arghh
 
550D has a better sensor for higher ISO and per pixel sharpness (same sensor as the 7D!!!). Also digic 4 chip and, of course, video.

50D has better build (but is also heavier) and more fps.

If you so not need the higher fps then surely get the 550D and add a grip. Terrific camera for the money.
 
Dont really need the fps, Im going to be doing family candids and studio portraits. Almost definitely no sport or landscapes.

Have you used the video? I've never used it on my D90 although it was one of the reasons I got the D90 rather than the D300 ;)
 
I've tried once while testing it and I've realised the memory cards I have are only class 4, so the video breaks up... doh!!
 
Keep the 550d and save up for some quality glass. If you are doing mainly portraits etc look at a canon 85mm 1.8.

Together with the 550d it is utterly superb.

I can't see how 'upgrading' to a 50d would help in this case
