i was just in the garden trying to shoot a fly on a leaf, got in real close, had lens on 18mm, af, mode a and using the viewfinder, the camera was refusing to shoot. the focus wasn't doing anything atall. what am i doing wrong :(

How far were you from the subject? You may have been too close ;)

it would help if people indicated the camera make/body -

the D5000 wont shoot in some modes if it is OOF

You were probably too close. There will be a minimum focussing distance for you lens and inside that it won't focus on the subject. For really close work you need a macro lens.
Try it again but focus on something in the distance and it should focus ok.

Sounds like you were closer than the lenses minimum focus distance. What lens are you using and how close were you (approximately)?

Probably too close to focus with auto focus. Turn auto focus off and see if it works then and you will know

ah yes, ok i was too close haha. i tried again from further back (about an inch) and it worked fine. sorry i guess it would help if i told you what camera i have... its a sony a390 with the 18-55mm lens

here is one of the shots, had a bit of a play with it in lr

at least the fly had the good manners to hang around while you sorted your camera out :geek:

Starting with the A290/390 and newer, Sony took out "release priority" from the menu so the camera's can no longer be set to fire even if not in focus.

Was the fly still alive when you took the shot ?! Sorry, don't wanna be rude...

im not sure why it was still there, but it was, made me wonder! i think it just really liked that leaf
