A relative has just spotted some DSLRs in the holiday shops in Tenerife...

- original post was asking about this, but on hearing the prices I realised that they must be fakes!

ShoeQueen, why have you removed your original message?
Sorry Chris - I was posting to ask as a relative was asking - then I heard the prices (eg 159 Euros for 500D...) and knew it was definitely a fake/scam - tried to delete thread as felt it was pretty pointless. Yes, agree with you - best avoided!

I know people who have bought things like compact digital cameras and mini-binoculars from resort shops and they've been fine and still working years later. And believe me, my family member is not someone to be talked into anything by sales pressure... but at those prices, the items must be fakes. They apparently have Canon and Nikon bodies and kit lenses, and Canon and Tamron lenses (no Nikon lenses). I'm guessing they all must be fake goods...

That's fine. IMO not a pointless thread though if it warns others off.

One of my in-laws (I'll not name who), bought a compact from one of the shops. Allegedly a JVC. On close inspection it must have been worth less than £20, even the JVC legend was a sticker. They were oblivious though.

It's just a shame that these shops have been getting away with it for so long and that the authorities over there have been unable to stamp it out.

Good point. I thought shops like that had unusual makes or models - but they have Sony, Canon and Nikon DSLRs (not sure what Sony model they had but it was the 500D and D5000).

Seems that the authorities will step in and sort out complaints and people have got refunds that way - but I'm surprised some of the shops are allowed to keep trading.

Saw a TV documentary once, these shops will demo the real 'camera' with you in the shop before the sale is made. When you've made up your mind, they will go to the back to get a 'new' one- but inside will be a different (read rubbish) camera, by the time you open up the box outside the shop and go back in, they will claim you are trying to scam them and refuse to return your money. If you are buying equipment/stuff abroad, always ask them to to open up the box for a quick 'check'.

Alas I'm sure plenty of people do fall for something like that. My relative is pretty sharp and would want to see the camera working in shop and watch it put away in the box and make sure that was the one he bought before parting with any money... but still sounds like too much of a risk - prices quoted were 560 Euros for D90 with 18-105VR kit lens...

But it did make me wonder if cameras are any cheaper at airport Currys/Dixons?

Its not just cameras / photo gear its anything with a power source, TV’s HIFI, Iphones, iPods you name it they sell it and some of them are genuine bits of kit but not new. They are factory seconds, service return items and even faulty goods that were intended for the crusher that somehow don’t end up there.

Even the shops are never quite what they seem to be, a quick google for a story from a few years ago threw up some recent examples but it goes back years, check this one out from 2002. http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/the-camera-never-lies--but-the-shopfront-might-655400.html

Very common, I had it tried on me in Las Americas (Palace Electronics, Centro Commercial San Eugenio), the fact that it was a Monday evening (at a time when flights to the UK only left on Tuesdays and Fridays) probably meant he felt he was safe that I wouldn't be able to come back the next day and complain.

There also used to be "Jessops" and "Dixons" shops that claimed to be branches of the UK chains and told customers that any warranty issues could be handled by their UK shops......

It was one of the shops at CC San Eugenio my family were in, and also one in the CC under Parque Santiago. Prices about £200 less than UK will tempt people, but not worth the risk!
