Yes
I'm after a lens to replace the 18-55 kit lens , Budget around £500 , I also dont mind buying a decent secondhand lens if the price is right

ultimately i'd like the nikkor 17-55 but its out my budget

obviusly anything I have would need a built in focus motor as its for my D60

any suggestions please ?

anyone got anything to sell me please ?

thanks

It would be useful to know what type of photography you are interested in ? - or do you want a general walkabout lens?

sorry , yes just a general walkabout lens but would like something thats capable of nice portrait shots of the kids

I've recently bought the 1.4 50mm and am really liking the thought of some more fast glass

Two lens come to mind; 16-85 VR AF-S, and the 18-70 AF-S.

I've had the 18-70 on two occasions; and I have to say, for the price, it's an outstanding lens. As for the 16-85VR, I've only heard good things about it. They're both a far cry better than the kit lens!

However, if you can stretch your budget a bit, then you may be able to pick-up a used 17-55 AF-S. I'm not sure of the going rate of this lens, 2nd-hand; but do an ebay search and see what prices are asked for it. If you find it within your range, post a "wanted" add here and you may be happily surprised.

I got a Nikon 18-105 for my D60 and although a great lens for the money it somewhat knackers the balance of the camera so my advice would be not to get a heavy lens.

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8?

Excellent lens and only around £300 so spare pennies!

just had a quick look and it looks like a good idea !

do you have this lens ?

how do they compare to ther none nikon brands i.e. sigma ?

thanks

Um, it is a non-Nikon brand itself, as with all lenses it depends on the design but the 17-50 is a goodun :)

I used to have one but sold it to get a "beast" There is some sample variation - not uncommon with most third party lenses IMO. If you get a sharp copy though it can knock spots of several far more expensive lenses!

If you do a search you will probably find several threads here about this lens as it is generally very well thought of.

For a full walkabout the 18-200mm would be my choice

That said I have an 18-70mm which is really good for the price, but doesn't quite have the reach for every occation that the 18-105 or even the 18-200 has.

A 17-55 2.8 went on here for £550 the other day. It's a big b****r though, and possibly will feel out of balance on a D60...

i was worried about the balance thing but wanted to get the best lens i could afford with a view to changing the body next

thanks everyone for the replies

Another vote here for the Nikon AF-S 16-85mm ED DX VR. Superb build quality and optics with a proper metal mount. Has a very useful range for a walkabout lens too, and showing new at about £395 on Camera Price Buster.

I've had the non-motored version of this Tamron, and it was amazingly sharp. However, if memory serves me right, the Tamron 17-50 without the motor is the one most cheer for! Tamron have since introduced another, newer, model with a motor that isn't as sharp! That's why I didn't mention it. May I suggest you do a bit of reading on this first, I could be wrong, but just to be on the safe side.

The balancing thing (camera vs. lens) can be an issue; but the results from the 17-55 AF-S will make you forget that all too soon; plus, if you're thinking of changing bodies next, then you'd ideally go with the 17-55 first! All too often you'll read "lens before body", and your case is no exception.

thanks for your reply , i'm going to look around for a secondhand 17-55 for a couple of weeks before taling the plunge with something new ,if I do buy new then theres some decisions to make

this lens definitely one i've been considering

Apart from the obvious differences i.e zoom range etc , do you think optically it will be much better than my 18-55 kit lens ?

thanks

As mentioned above, you may want to consider the Nikon 18-70. It's a lens that is quite revered and has a very modest price tag (used but as-new ones going for between £110 and £140). I'm on the lookout for a good copy to become my general walkabout glass having researched quite a few options, plus it will leave me funds for a good UWA.

Another one you may wish to look into is the new(ish) Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC OS Macro lens.

please excuse the "butt-in"......

if I sell my D40 with kit 18-55 and buy a D90 body......

how do you ascertain if it's a "good copy" when it's in the "Classifieds"...? thanks....

I'd ask for a few example shots to be posted in the for-sale thread to demonstrate the IQ the lens produces at different focal lengths.

I have the Tamron 17-50,mine hasn`t got a built in motor, you would need one that has.I also have the 17-55 Nikon, the IQ of the Tamron is damned near as good as the 17-55, build quality is nowhere near as good, but if your careful with your kit, that shouldn`t be a problem. There seems to be more 17-55 coming onto the SH market as people go FF,it could be worth hanging out for one.

I had an 18-70 Nikon, but made the mistake of selling it.It is a cracking little lightweight lens.

Your choice at the end of it all mate. 3 good lenses to choose from there.

Tamron 28-75mm and the Sigma 30mm.

I have the 50 1.4 as well but it hardly gets a look in when I have the Sigma to hand, on a crop body I find the 50 slightly too long, whereas the 30 is perfect for portraits and general stuff. The 28-75 give the extra reach is required, although you could also look for the 18-135 Nikon, it's amazingly sharp throughout the range and can be picked up for about £120 second hand.

thought so, but seeing all the "altered" images using editing etc - is this a valid method ?

There's an element of trust involved, however I'm sure 99.9% of members here would not knowlingly sell you a short-sighted duffer. If I was selling a lens and asked to provide some examples I'd take a fresh set of three (1x near, 1x mid, 1x far) then post them in the thread untouched, albeit resized to meet with the 800x600 pixel count rule.

I went through a selection of DX walkabout lenses and settled on a 16-85 VR. I never thought that the image quality of the 18-200 was up to scratch and the extra 2mm at the wide end was worth much more to me than the extra telephoto reach. You can pick them up for £300-£350 second hand (i got mine from the classified forum). The only slight downside of the lens is the bucketload of barrel distortion at the wide end so if you use something like DxO to correct distortion you have to leave a bit of space around the subject when you take the photo. Mind you, most of the alternatives also suffer in a similar manner at the wide end.

Just a consideration, the lens I enjoyed most on my D60 was the AFS 35mm F1.8.

Having a non-zoom lens does wonders for your creativity...

I've recently bought the 50mm 1.4 which gives me a similar option

its partly through buying this large aperture lens thats making me want to replace my kit lens

Guys, sorry to butt in. The 18-70mm that's being talked about.. would this be the same one that came with the D80?

My friend has a D80 and the 18-70mm AF-S 3.5-4.5G ED, which he then gave to me for my D40x as he bought the 18-200mm.

Is this the same 18-70 that's being mentioned elsewhere on here?

Yes. I had this lens as it was the kit lens on the D70 which was my first DSLR.

Looks like I did alright out of him just giving it to me then! People on here seem to love it!

Actually, he didn't give it to me. He swapped it for my old set of golf clubs as I'd just bought a new set, but still.. Feels like free!

£500 budget?

By a D80 /D90 then you won't have to worry about motorised lenses

Oh, you did pretty good indeed with that!

I had that lens, sold it to a local store. Next day, went back and bought it off them :cuckoo::p It's that good!

really? But it's a few years old (was the kit lens with his D80), and feels quite.. I don't know how to put it.. plastic-y?

I'm pleased if this is the lens everyone loves, as I was considering getting rid and upgrading as I thought it was 'just a kit lens', but if people think this lens is great then I'll reconsider. Personally, I think it's great, but then I'm pretty new to things so thought I was just easily pleased
