I own a second hand canon 5dii and Im getting a bit annoyed that the previous owner keeps coming up on my metadata!! Can I change it and if so does it have to be through the utility software which I do not have?

You can change it on the camera itself, in the menus under Copyright and Author's name. It is under the Spanner icon when you press the Menu button.

are you sure thats not on the 5d3?
 
Thought it was the same menu for the mk2 and mk3. If not it will be there somewhere but maybe titled slightly differently.
