Can i get a lens fixed?

The auto focus on my Tamron 90 isn't working - local camera shop charges £35 to look at things and see if they are repairable.
 
That should read "where can ...."

Thanks for the reply,I was hoping for personal recommendation - I'm not at all impressed by our local shop, I don't mind posting it away if anyone has any suggestions.
 
how old is the lens ??
if it's not that old it might be worth getting in touch with tamron uk saying something along the lines of " i expected a lens of this quality to not fail in such a short period of time " etc..

they might do a free repair if you get the wording right
worth a try..
 
Has it worked before? I mean did it work then stop? Im not sure if all tamron 90's have a motor built in, so it wouldnt autofocus on a d3000. If it worked and has now stopped, then presumably the motor has died, and will probably cost £150+ to fix.
Sometimes the clutch on thse can be a bit sticky. Pull the clutch back and foward a few times, you might free it if its stuck.
 
I've just had a 100mm macro with a busted motor done at Fixation for £180. Works great now compared to what it was. Turnaround time was about eight working days. Great service as always

Sorry to be dumb but clutch???? What part is that. Also I have read on Internet it's advisable to try cleaning the electric contacts - any ideas on what with?
 
At that price to fix - I will have to get better at manual focussing :)

No sure how old your lens is, but on mine, the clutch is on the focus ring. Pull the ring towards the camera for manual focus ( you should see a blue ring) and push forwards for auto focus.
If that doesn't sort it, you could clean the contacts with alcohol or contact cleaner, carefully ( lint free cloth or a good quality cotton bud) if that doesn't work either, you may have a busted lens, which can be bought used for around £200. A repair may not be cost effective.

Thanks I'll give all that a go tomorrow evening. Fingers crossed - a repair is pointless at those prices - I'd be as well to get a new lens.

Yes the clutch is the focus ring. Sometimes they get stuck halfway between autofocus and manual. So just pull it bak and forwards a few times. Make sure you set it back to autofocus before testing it again. Also when moving it back and forwards, twist the focus rung a little. This should help the gears engage.
