I'm shooting with a canon 5D mkII and triggering flashes with Elinxhrom Skyport system which fires my 2 550 EXs and a Metz 45CL flashgun. I was looking at the 550s and thinking they're pretty expensive considering I no longer need the IR communication, and as I'm shooting everything manually I thought can I use more basic flashes? Even the popular SB800s, because I'm judging all the distance and power myself. The elinchrom just fires the radio signal to tell the flash to fire.

If you reckon it's possible, what's the best value best power flash for firing off on locations? I don't need crazy power as I've already got the Elimchrom Range 1100 kit, I'm looking for portability here, and ability to control flash power in stops manually.
