I'm browsing ebay for a close up lens, from a few of my threads, there's been mention of a 50mm lens. There is one on Ebay with this title: Canon FD 50 mm F1.8 Lens AV-1 A-1 F-1 T90.. but i'm not sure if this is what's been suggested. Thank you kindly.

It will not fit your 600D as it is an FD lens, not without an adapter anyway.
You need an EF or EFs lens.
 
No, I don't think it's the one. It's an old manual lens which will not fit on your 600D.

The one suggested was Canon 50mm 1.8 EF II
 
You mention that you are looking for a close up lens - while the 50mm EF f1.8 II is a nice little portrait lens its not a true close up or macro lens (although it does work fairly well with tubes which may be what is being suggested)

He's right yer know! it also works well with the Raynox macro adapter lens.
 
As said EF or EFs mount for your 600D

You could always buy second hand from the classifies here or somewhere like AVF, I bought mine new in the US, but just bought a 24-105 second hand and saved a fortune...for lenses, second hand would be the best way to go..

^^^ this. Cheapest way to get into close-ups is the Raynox DCR-150 adapter (for flowers/butterflies) or DCR-250 for really close (bugs and beetles). About £40 from Amazon. Raynox works well on just about any lens from around 50mm to 200mm or so. Check out these galleries on Flickr, only 26,000 images! http://www.flickr.com/groups/raynoxdcr250/

50 1.8 lens is great value, and good for shallow depth of field tricks, eg portraits, but not much else. It won't go very close without some help, like the Raynox or extension tubes.

Completely different lenses Naz. The Tamron is a zoom lens which goes from a shortest focal length of 55mm to a longest of 200mm and the other is a 'prime' which means it's a fixed focal length, in this case 50mm.
It also means it has a fixed aperture as opposed to the Tamron zoom which will change the maximum aperture according to the focal length you set the lens at.

As Woz said.

Not sure what you want to shoot Naz but if it's close-ups, one of the Raynox adapters would go very well on that Tamron, though the Canon 55-250 is pic of the bunch on the more affordable side of tele-zooms like that.

Also good for portraits, or sport/action or even wildlife if it's not too small or far away.

The main appeal of the 50 1.8 is it's very low f/number, for shallow depth of field effects and shooting in low light. It's fixed at 50mm of course, but there's nothing else out there that does f/1.8 for £80.
 
Thanks both, what I want it for is to be able to do outdoor portraits with blurry/bokeh background..but would also need something that can be used to try studio portraits too. There is just too many lenses and I can't understand the differences between them.

Indeed. The canon 55-250 works superbly with the Raynox as well. Gets nice and close! I used this with a Raynox DCR 250 with good results.

Yep, or next up, the canon 85mm f/1.8 though it's costs a bit more than the 50mm f/1.8!
 
Just an update from me. I have a new 50mm lens! Thx for all the help! I can't wait to have a play!

Could anyone help with one more lens plz? Sigma 55-200. My lens kit us 18-55. So looking for something with longer zoom. Thx all!

A bit pricey but iv seen photos taken with this lens. *sigh* I will own it one day but might have to save up a bit more.
 
Thx for linky. I might wait a bit and just get the canon one. From reading forum posts here I know one can end up with loads of lens! I just have to be careful where the cash goes. I still need to get a good pc for editing pics but the OH needs one too so we might end up going half on a high spec one. Depending on how the savings account look at the end of the month I will have a rethink.
