I took these pictures in my garden but I have no idea what these little chaps are? Insect names?

Any ideas folks?

I got a shot of one of these (or something very similar looking) a few days ago too. Don't know what it is, but I see a lot of them about. I'd assume it's some kind of fly.

Look like soldier flies to me but not #2, not sure what that is ;)

I would suggest going on the angle of the wings, the zig zag wing veins & hairy ass,
that its a cluster-fly, the colour is a little off though. It depends
on how heavy the processing was, wadda you say Alby?

Nope not hairy enough for cluster/attic flies.
I would say it was one of these but don't know what they are :shrug:

Can't open the flickr Alby
But I do know what cluster flies look like ( but not in close up)
As I kill hundreds and thousands of the little buggers
over the late autumn and early spring months :D
I agree that one is not really that hairy plus the back is not brown enough hence the comment about "processing"
Maybe it just had a shave for the camera :shrug: :D

I must say with the unknown fly in #2 the detail on the wings is really good.
