Can someone recommend a ball head

Hi all,

I have a manfrotto monopod and need a head for it. Prefer a ball head over a 3-way but want something with a decent lock so I can wave my camera in the air with it and get some high angle shots. The rest of the times its probably going to have my 100-400 on it so also need something smooth for panning.

I have the Giottos MH1301 Tripod Head & Quick Release Plate which is excellent with my 100-400. However, I think a 3-way pan & tilt head would be better for panning.
The Giottos was purchased from MyMemory for about £62.

Or if you want a cheaper copy - and they are good copies, then try one of these. I have one myself and it carries a Sigma 80-400 + 5D with no complaints.

Hi I have ordered a redsnapper ball head, but not taken delivery yet so cannot recommend but many others have. Have a look for the redsnapper thread, there is a 10% discount code too. Should be in your budget.

Get the Redsnapper, I had one sold it and bought another recently, very good ballhead for the money. When locked up it ain't going anywhere. slightly over budget when you include postage though but you won't regret the extra.

I don't like a ballhead on a monopod - far too floppy. A tilt head is all one really needs and the Manfrotto 234RC2 is OK for a small lens like the 100-400. Panning with a monopod is easily done by just rotating the pod.

^WHS. There's very little point in having a ballhead on a monopod and the 234 is an excellent bit of kit.

D'oh - didn't think about just turning the monopod to pan :bonk:

There is a point to having a ballhead on a monopod. Sometimes you can't rotate the monopod because it's up against a wall or something and you're leaning against it to make it more stable. Unless you want to take the paint off it and gouge it.
