Can someone test a lens for me?

Then you shouldn't buy a camera you obviously don't know how to use! Either that or you're not prepared to put the time and effort into learning how to use it!

The 7d, in the correct hands, is a fantastic camera with a superb focusing system.

And as for the 100-400L. Well, personal taste is one thing, but for the person earlier in this thread to say that the Sigma 150-500 is a better lens...

YOUR 7D is a fantastic camera with a superb focussing system. That doesn't mean that every 7D ever produced is, does it?

I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong with my 7D and it may well be that I don't know how to use it. But there are several suggestions in this thread that all 7D's ever produced are fantastic bits of kit being used by numpties. Not necessarily true, of course.

Right let's sort this out.

Are you saying that AF isn't functioning correctly when you use single point and focus on your subject, or are you saying that the camera doesn't focus on what you want it to when you have all AF points enabled?

If it's the latter, then even Canon haven't managed to fit AI into their cameras yet so it isn't able to guess what subject you intend to shoot. It'll just do what it's programmed to do, which is focus on the nearest significant object.

If it's the former and you are getting OOF shots when using the AF system properly then it may need to be recalibrated. Post an example photo, stating what you had in mind whilst taking it, and we'll see if we can work out what's wrong.
 
Also just got a 7D to replace my 40D, started off on factory settings, centre point focus, ISO 100 and AV mode

Seems to do what it should and didn't find it much of a problem to use, not much different to my old 40D, will investigate the AF system further when I get a chance, but for now happy taking some pics which I must say do have good detail.

My daughter has a 550D and having seen some of her shots made me greedy for a 7D, can see how it could be confusing to a newcomer to a DSLR, but one step at a time and read the manual
