Hi all,

I want to buy a 10 stop filter (don't have the patience to wait 5-7 weeks on a Lee filter) but this is the first type of filter I have bought so I wanted to run the basics by someone with experience before I either bought the wrong items or missed something.

These are to go on my D700 and sigma 24-70 2.8.

So what I can gather I will need a filter holder and then obviously the filter itself.

I was going to buy these two items:

Please dont waste your £££ on the hitachi rubbish! Wait for te lee filter!!!!!!! B
 
I would suggest ignoring the 'Hitachi' comment given how good the reviews of the latest Hitech pro stop are.

The two product that you have linked to will work fine but you will also need an adaptor (82mm for your lens I think). I would recommend Teamworkphoto.com. I ordered a Lee Foundation kit and Hitech pro stop from them just last week and their price and delivery were excellent.

Just as a side not though. The Lee kit is very expandable. If you can see yourself using a lot of filters in the future, its perfect. If you just want to use a 10 stopper, maybe something like a B&W or LCW screw in filter would be more cost effective.

Cheers for the info. I will take a look at teamworkphoto as an alternative to amazon, etc. Glad you mentioned the adaptor ring, you are correct my lens is 82mm. I wouldn't have knew I also needed it.

Just to add to that, you should be able to use the standard (and much cheaper) 82mm adaptor rather that the wide angle one for your lens.

Oh and to clarify, only buy Lee lens adaptors for Lee kits. The hitech ones won't work. Probably obvious but these filter systems can be confusing so I thought it's maybe worth mentioning.

Sorry to sound stupid but just to verify I am correct before I spend some money.

I need the following:

LEE Filters Holder Adaptor Ring - Standardn (82mm size)
LEE Holder System - Foundation Kit
Hitech 100 PRO STOPPER 10 - ( 1.5mm Gasket) Lee 100 fit

Can I ask one more question, I see there is a 1.5mm and a 3.0mm Gasket but they are the same price, what is the difference in this?

The 1.5mm version is designed to fit the Lee holder. The 3mm is for Hitech's own holder system. You need the 1.5mm.
 
I was on the teamworkphoto website, added all my items to basked, proceeded to payment then noticed the site isn't secure, standard http (not https) section where you enter in your card payment details. Good luck, off to amazon it is.

Strange. I didn't see that. Could you give them a call maybe and do things over the phone?

Yea might do that, never keen on ordering online when the site is not using https where you enter in your payment details.

The flip side is that amazon do not do the 82mm adaptor ring so I'll give them a ring to see what they say.

Speedgraphic and warehouse express are worth a look too. Just check that whoever you order from have stock first as supplies of both Lee and Hitech gear are being outstripped by demand right now.

budget for as steady a tripod as you can find and a remote timed release also, if you don't already have them.
In my (limited) experience, too light/flimsy a tripod - even with a heavy camera and lens on top - tends to vibrate in wind a lot more than you'd think, (especially if you're shooting wind-whipped waves on the North Antrim coast!;)), introducing image "softness" over a long exposure.
The release is useful to avoid having to use the "bulb" setting manually - I got a wired electronic release from Calumet (Belfast), not the cheapest but very versatile. http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/eng/product/calumet_pro_series_digital_shutter_timer_controller/cf0098
but I'm sure similar can be found for less on the web.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for that, I already have an excellent tripod and both wired and wireless shutter release. Just need to part with the money for the filter/holder/adaptor kit :)

Well I ordered the adaptor ring, filter holder and hitech 10 stopper. Couldn't find a site that had the 82mm adaptor ring in stock, good old ebay, company selling them brand new. The other two were bought from amazon who incidently are coming from teamworkphoto via amazon lol.

Can't wait to get out and try some long exposures.
