Can you advise on a walkaround bag?

Hi,

Since my daughter introduced me to the dangers of sand, and then managed to get the stuff all over the back seat where my camera sits when I'm just taking it and one lens (btw sand seems impossible to fully remove! At least from my car anyway) I need to look to some sort of carry round bag.

UPDATE FROM MY GOOD WIFE: My baby son helped with the sand it seems - yes the only thing they'll ever agree on in their life no doubt is to conspire against me with sand :)

I'd prefer a backpack style, but it has to be able to hold a gripped 7D with a 100-400 mounted on it and a spare lens (no bigger than the 100mm macro though), and also preferably fairly cheap, so no need for submersible bags!

Have a look at the Crumpler range. Brilliant bags and waterproof (so should be somewhat sandproof!(?)). As you only want body/lens and an extra lens to store, a 'half-photo' bag could be great as you then have space for other things.

I also stumbled across the Lowepro SlingShot 302AW, I understand its an upgraded 300AW, which could take a 40D + 100-400, so should do the same.

Any first hand experience out there?
 
Well, a couple of measurements later and I've gone with the 302 AW (£43 from Amazon, but its a weekly deal so it ends tomorrow).

I'll feed back how it works out.
 
Ah fair enough. I prefer having two straps for the better support (plus I go skiing with it aswell) so I have the Fastpack 250.
The slingshot is well recommended so should be great buy!
 
I have a slingshot. Loved it, until I got a grip and a Bigger lens. Find that it's too small now and the zip has started to rip. Also find that when over one shoulder for a long while (long walk etc) then it aches a bit. I'm in the Market for a backpack style bag now.
 
I have a grip and was a little concerned about the depth, but my tamrak is just the same depth so I wasn't worried,now I am wondering if I fluffed it.
 
Well the bag arrived and there is absolutly no issue with having the grip on at all, loads of room, with the 100-400 on its a snug fit, but again fine.

I do agree though that it wouldn't be that great for a long day out as the single shoulder approach isn't that great and starts to ache after a while, but that is countered by the handy swing round/easy access idea.

Ill in all its an excellent bag.
