Ok after many posts...discussions...and advice from a lot of members...

I have finally decided to pop for the "Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM"...now the challenge...I can get it for £690...so...

Does anyone know of a better deal...or better lens...or reason not to buy my choice...

The biggest thing is the expense...but when weighing it up...I want a lens that will not compromise...and a keeper...I havent found anyone yet with a really negative thing to say (maybe just the cost)...

Now off to Jessops tomorrow to play with the 500d and 50d...and see what feels best...ther is about a £250 price diffence also...

Comments on my camera choices are more tham welcome...I may also wait and see if the next few weeks bring new Canons...before I purchase...

FIRE AWAY...!!!

The reviews on camera price buster rate the lens (apart from it flares easily apparently), and you have it there at £60 cheaper than CPB says...

i try and avoid EF-S lens or lens made specifically for cropped bodies, as they are no use on the FF and to spend that much and then have the hassle of selling it and buying another lens for a FF body. But thats just my opinion, some people dont plan to go to FF. I was in your dilemna a few months ago and I opted against the large cash outlay for the 17-55mm 2.8 IS, and instead picked up the very good tamron 17-50mm 2.8. That way I could still afford to go FF in the future and keep this lens on the cropped bodies.

Just my 2 cents!

dont think you'll get that lens brand new any cheaper, looks like thats a Kerso price you have already

Have you PM'd Kerso to see what his price is? I got mine from him about 10 days ago and he beat everywhere. Will depend on the exchange rate

If you want no compromise, and you've got the cash then go for it. However, if you don't need IS, personally I think you'd be insane not to look at the Tamron or Sigma equivalents, you could save yourself around £500, for minimal image degredation. But I guess that's not what you asked is it?! I would have loved to get one, but I couldn't justify the additional cost. If you can, then I'm sure you won't be dissapointed!

Thats Kersos prices from the list...

Arent one stop digital a wee bit shady...as regards warranty and import costs still to be added etc...just a vibe i picked up from some of the posts...?

as chris321 says, I would say that you try out the best and 2nd best lens. In this case the Canon and then either a tamron or sigma. From reviews I found the tamron pipped the sigma slightly. Then you can work out if the extra 300 odd pounds is worth it for the marginal increase in IQ.

Nope Chris...

Does anyone know of a better deal...or better lens...or reason not to buy my choice...

All opinions and comments welcome...thats the point as I am spending quite a bit of money...

I will also try the Tamron & Sigma when I go for a trial run...sd card in hand at Jessops tomorrow morn...no point being silly...I can then see them side by side...

I have been shooting with a Bridge with IS for a couple of years...so dont know if I can do without it...

If i could...I could spend the money on a second lens...or flash and diffuser etc...!!!

Nope, never had any problems, if you way import tax on it they refund you so teh price is what you pay. They even provide a warrenty, but it is their own and not manufacturer warranty, but then a lot have international cover so that doesnt matter.

As for beating the price, nope, cant beat it :)

im not an expert on this things, but i think the IS on a bridge and the IS on a lens are a bit different. You may find that you dont need the IS on the lens (especially in those focal lengths). I have very shaky hands, and I get some good shots with my tamron as I can get atleast 1.4-1.6x of the focal length as a shutter speed. With bridge cameras they handle ISO differently (in my opinion) and the aperture feels different too (you dont get the bokeh an SLR lens provides at the same aperture), so I think the comparison isnt like for like. Also you can combat camera shake for free by improving your technique. If your like me, I shot the bridge by looking at the LCD, that itself increases the shake. With a nice meaty SLR in your hands, and your arms tucked in, deep breath and click.. your camera shake should be better.

I only have one IS lens, and I paid massive money for it, because I was shooting cropped at the time and the focal length requires it. I love the lens, but I get away without IS on the smaller lengths on my other lenses. I would say that you should pay the premium for IS when you truely need it.

Comments on your camera choices...

Wait for the 60D to come out - apparently it will be around early September with full HD video etc.

Slightly off thread but has anyone else had to add a credit card to their paypal recently...?

BEWARE...!!!

You have to verify the card by sending a £1 transaction...(I am sure this has changed since the last time I confirmed)...wait until the transaction is completed...2/3 days...but then put in a four digit code from your statement...weeks to wait on statement to arrive...

So Im left waiting until I can clear the card to then pay for my camera & Lens...

Not so good if you are in a hurry...Doh...!!!

THANKS for the comments, every little bit helps...hope you are all still around when I actually get the camera...been used to my FZ30...

Anyone got any comparison comments about the 500d Vs 50d apart from size etc...not many people have had much to say over my last few posts...

The reason for me thinking 500d is also that it is about the same size as my FZ30...fits well in the hand...but well see what Jessops brings tomorrow...

Looking forward also to seeing what September brings with the new camera...I'll prob hold off unless I totally opt fr the 500d...THEY ARE NOT UPGRADING THAT AS WELL ARE THEY...?

i might try them in the future. I always went with Kerso, because the small difference between his price and HK prices are worth it for the peace of mind.

I usually dont bank online...the Mrs phonebanks...

Didnt think about going ion right enough...suppose if you got your card they may be able to tell me...

Accepted now that I wont be takin my new camera on hols to Mexico...Luggage allowance is a measly 15kg anyway and 5kg for hand...

So by the time I get back there may be a new baby canon delivered...!!!

+1
Great service, quick delivery, and OneStop will repay the import duty if you get collared. I have order lenses, filters and flashes from them and not had a single problem. Delivery typically takes 2-3 working days.

The EF 17-55mm offers great IQ, but supposedly has a so-so build which loves sucking in dust. On a crop frame, I would prefer the 24-105 F/4L and a cheap wide angle lens, perhaps the Tokina 12-24mm or Sigma 10-22mm. The 24-105 buils is Sooooo much better than the 17-55, and you can resuse it if you upgrade to FF in the future.

If you got a prob do you have to return the camera to Hong Kong...?

How good is their warranty...?

You ever had to claim...?

THANKS

Sorry, but that has been the case for at least the last 5 years

Agree with this. IS is nice, I half considered this lens as an upgrade to the 18-55 kit. However, at these focal lengths, with a good ISO handling camera (my want to upgrade to the 50d) then IS is not a requirement.

Looking forward also to seeing what September brings with the new camera...I'll prob hold off unless I totally opt fr the 500d...THEY ARE NOT UPGRADING THAT AS WELL ARE THEY...?

I did see one rumour which suggested that the new cameras are likely to 1 pro- body, and 1 lesser body. This suggested to me at the time that it might not be the 60d I am hoping for, but a 5d/7d and a 1000d/600d.
However, if you are happy with the 500d, then wait, don't look at the specs of any camera lesser than the 50d/60d, and just enjoy the price decrease...

My memory must be fading...cant remember having this hassle the first time round...I always use my credit card with paypal... thet are a lot more help and actually fight for you if it all goes pear shaped...happened twice to me...

If the lens arrives faulty you will need to send it back, but OneStop will refund the costs. I have never had a lens that "went faulty". I had one that I dropped 6ft, but warranty would not have helped there anyway. Lenses all tend to either work or not from new.

Even if you do have to return it within the year, the money you save will more than cover any postage costs. As a pure guess, you probably stand a 1-in-50 chance of having an issue in year 1. The extra £60-£70 saved will buy a nice filter or two.

Why not do a bank transfer? You may even get it cheaper from Kerso that way.:)

I have one of these lenses its a big step up in quality and weight from a kit lens.
