Yes
I`m after a compact with a decent zoom, my budget is somewhere upto around £250. Ive lost track of what are decent compacts these days, it doesn`t have to be ultra small, just something that produces good images and has a decent LCD screen and decent megapixels with a good zoom range. Thanks

Ive been looking on google and came across these 2, the thing that puts me off the Lumix is apparently it has a dodgy loose control dial, i don`t know a lot about the Canon,

Have a look at this thread.. might help..

I received my TZ7 yesterday and first impressions, very nice. And the dial thing really isn't an issue. You have to take into account that some of the on-line reviews can become a physical version of 'pixel peeping' - it reall isn't an issue.

There is a lnk in the thread above to a DP review of 5 compact PAS big zoom cameras - have a read.

Ive been using the Panasonic Lumix FZ18 and cant fault it at all really, zoom is 28 - 503 equiv' (X18 optical)

I've a DMC-TZ6 - similar to the TZ7 but with more limited video capabilities. Otherwise it's pretty much the same as it's big brother. I miss not having a proper viewfinder - first month spent more time wiping nose-prints of the LCD than taking pictures, until I got used to it. The sloppy control dial is irritating at first - it really needs stronger detents between options imho, but you get used to checking it's not slipped as you pull it from your pocket/case. Zoom range is excellent, and the image stabilisaton does a decent job of curing hand-held wobblies. Only thing I miss is the ability to shoot raw, tbh.

My Canon Ixus 950IS has probably been replaced by now but I have been ever so pleased with it and it has a good zoom. All the Canon Ixus models I have tried have been good. This is the second one I have owned

Thanks Ben, ive just been on the panasonic site and had a look at its big brother the FZ28, they look ideal for what i need, its not a compact camera but thats no problem as its mainly a point and shoot what i need at the min and portability isn`t too much of an issue.

The FZ28 is a cracking camera. The zoom alone is a major selling point. I have taken pictures upto 32x (after 18x it become digital zoom), and have had some very reasonable results (the grain is comparable to images shot under high ISO). It has an image stabiliser, and no matter what I do to it I can't get it to blur (unless i choose a stupidly slow shutter). The only downside I would say (I dont know whether it is specific to this camera or common to all Bridge cameras) is that the aperture range isnt great. But then again i dont have it as a replacement for my SLR, its there to compliment it, and to get those low light shots that my shaky hands and restrictive lens cannot even begin to capture.

I bought mine off pixmania for £200 as it was a refurb or customer return, but with full gaurantee and in mint condition.
