Can you replace the bayonet on a lens?

I've seen a couple of cheap Nikon lenses, but they're the low end ones with a plastic bayonet, and a few of them are going cheap because the bayonet is broken!

Is it possible to replace a broken bayonet or is it best to give these lenses a wide berth?

It's possible to change the bayonet but TBH, on a cheapo lens, I would be worried about further, internal damage caused by the drop. The other potential problem (or another) is the electrical contacts which are behind the bayonet. Befoe buying and attempting to repair lenses, consider looking for some knackered ones and having a go at dismantling them to see what other surprises may be waiting!

Cheers, I'll give them a call to see how much the part is. The lens I was looking at (Nikon DX 55-200 4-5.6 VR) originally comes with a plastic bayonet, would it be possible to replace this with a metal one?

Good idea, I'll see if I can pick up a really knackered lens, this way I can see what I'm letting myself in for... I can solder, but I'm not really sure how it's all wired up inside so I think I'll try and see inside a broken one first.
