Folks,

Just a had a few days in Dorset. I loved the effect of the CPL on my 15-85, how well do they work on an UWA?

  • Do they fit ok?
  • Vignette?
  • Distortion?

Anybody tried one?

Thanks in advance....

Hi. I have a 10-22 and a CPL. You have to watch the vignetting at the widest, and you must get a low-profile filter (mine cost somewhat more than the 'budget' versions, although none are 'cheap' at 77mm) otherwise you have a circle rather than a rectangular image!

This sounds like the right kind of description ? I have this one for my 15-85

Hoya 77mm Pro1 Digital CPL filters are high quality Circular Polarisers which ... Low Profile Frame Ultra thin filter frames which help avoid vignetting ..

Anybody else to low profile?

Came across this as an example of cost.

I've used this combo.... its fantastic but you have to be aware of the effect you can see in the sky (and probably other things that the CPL works on too but usually its sky) in that you can get a shift in colour tone across the sky - and thats because out on the wide end you have almost 180 degrees of coverage and that basically is changing the direction of the light hitting the front element, despite the CPL being only in a flat plane... so you effectively get different polarisation across the frame.

Not really a "problem" but you'll find some comment on it in your photos or you might scratch your head as to why it looks like it does -but now you know :D

Great lens though, and lovely with a CPL in my book.

^^ what he said.

I use a 10-22 with a slimline hoya pro digital cpl and it works well as long as you're careful you remember to set the cpl appropriately for the shot.

here's one taken at 10mm with the cpl

Thanks for the replies folks... Think I will order one

I have a Tiffen WIDE ANGLE CPL (slim profile). It was about $130 I think and I use it with my EF 24L, but will also try it with my EF 10-22mm. Because it's a slim profile filter it doesn't have an outer threaded part to it so you can't secure a standard lens cap over the top. It's also very awkward to rotate if you have a hood attached. I guess a hood would be fairly unnecessary with the CPL anyway.

cheapest place I found to order a Hoya CPL was onestop-digital (linky)

I went for the HD version over the Pro as it seemed to add extra protection in case of mishaps (not that I'm planning any). It's a lovely thing and now permanently lives on my 24-105L

I have tried it with my Tokina 12-24 but I get too much variation in the effect on blue skies - just something to be aware of.
