Canon 100-400 IS L lens query

Can someone tell me what the difference is between Stabiliser 1 and 2 modes as I dont have a manual for this lens

I think mode 2 is panning mode - here's a link to the manual..

1 - static stabilisation so it stabilisers both horizontal and vertical planes.
2 - Panning stabilisation so you can pan moving objects.

I prefer mine switched off as I do with all my lenses.
Focus seems much quicker to me.
It might be worth trying.

This was one of the first EOS lenses to have IS. Later lenses implement it much better.

I seem to remember your supposed to wait a second after activating for the system to stabilise (Should cover the whole grid)! Second position for that slow shutter, blurred back ground effect, never seemed to work with my version. I'M definitely too old and dithery to get smooth panning with it now!

As above re the panning on pos 2, I generally switch the IS off if I'm panning at any reasonable speed. I've found the lens tends to focus and lock on quicker if the IS is switched off. The position 2 allows you movement in 1 plane, but the IS still has to switch on and activate.
