Hi all,

Been thinking of getting myself a 100-400 is L for a while now, and have finally saved up enough cash for one, but I had a thought about the 70-200 is L f2.8 version for all round photography with a 2x convertor for my wildlife stuff.

Anyone else used this set up, what's your thoughts.

What body are you using? F/5.6 when using the converter would be quite hard unless you've got a camera that's good at 3200+ ISO.

I'd go for the 100-400 if I were you.

I've recently bought a 100-400L for my 500D and absolutely love it. As said remember that with a 2x you'll be losing a bit of IQ and IS unless you get the 70-200 L IS and be running at f5.6

AF will still work on a 70-200 f2.8 with 2x albeit at a slower rate than normal as in effect your running at f5.6. On a 450D the 100-400 will not AF...

Definitely the 100-400 in preference to the 70+200+2x. A much more flexible lens.

Unless you can stretch to the 70-200 version II, which works much better with the 2x.

The 100-400L will AF if you know the dodge, I use a 1.4 on mine. It does however knock the IQ a tad.

If you buy the 100-400L make sure that if you see what looks like thin black paper coming from under the front section you get it in for repair during warrenty. My friction ring has failed and it's a costly repair.

Use as little friction as you can to minimise the risk of failure.

My choice would be 100-400L over the 70-200L but only if you like carrying a heavy load.

Don't hesitate in buying one get your wallet out and spend the dosh :D

I'll dig out a picture of the dodge tonight, it involves covering three pins on the TC.

The image does look a tad soft with my Kenko pro 1.4x TC but it would only need a slight tweak in Photoshop to sort it out.

Thanks for all the input on this thread, was leaning on the side of 100-400,
but it's good to get the help from you guys who have the lenses in question.

From what I gather the 100-400 is a cracking lens, I've just got to keep a eye out for one now.................
