canon 100-400L worth repairing??

Friend of mine managed to drop her 100-400 and has a quote from canon for £500 to repair it and that is even before they've taken it to bits fully. Is it worth repairing or would it be better to sell the damaged one and get something cheaper? If so, what would be reasonable? What is a damaged 100-400L worth roughly?

It rolled out of a bag onto the floor from sofa height with her 7d attached :( It's chipped on the outer casing and the zoom ring is now stiff. It seems to take pictures ok at the moment but I have no idea whether it would continue to do so or would just stop working altogether.

£500 repair cost is out of the question.

Any bright ideas other than drowning her sorrows in Ben & Jerrys?
 
What Canon repairer was that, sounds like Lehmanns with that sort of silly price?

Give the ones at Elstree a try if you haven't already
 
If it works and she can get by with it as it is, then just keep it. I've seen these sell for as little as £750, so with history, even if it were repaired, it's probably not worth that much.

Alternatively, you may find someone willing to pay £400 as it is; you'd be amazed at what eBayers are prepared to buy.
 
Could look at the sigma 150-500 2nd hand be cheaper than fixing the 100-400, then put it on ebay and get her money back for the sigma.
Just a thought.

Blimey, that's a lot of damage from such a small height drop, perhaps try ACS in Norfolk have heard they are fairly reasonable for repairs
 
It's worth a quick trip to Lehmans anyway, it's only just down the road from you.

£500 to fix, someones havin a laugh.
 
It's not my camera. And my friend is in Norfolk so ACS is a better bet for her to try next :thumbs:

I'm surprised the canon estimate came back so high as they originally said about £200 which I thought was reasonable. Now they've got it, it has more than doubled!
