Canon 100-400L

Am pretty sure the 100-400 is weather sealed but you need a filter to complete the sealing.
 
The Canon 100-400 is not weather sealed.

I have used mine in light rain and it has been ok. In heavy rain wrap a poly bag around it.
 
Not all L's are weather sealed, there is a list on here somewhere that Canon Bob put up ages ago. I'll try and find it at some point, im sure the 100-400 isnt one of them.
 
I've used two plastic bags over mine in the past with no problems or there are special purpose rain covers on the market if it's going to be a regular happening.
 
Personally I wouldn't trust mine to be waterproof at all. Consider the difference in internal volume between the lens at 100mm and 400mm. Either the air (and so the water) can get in and out or each time you zoomed in or out, the lens would spring back to it's focal length when fitted to the camera.
 
I've used mine in light rain but it's not really designed for much more than that. Best to cover it with something really.

Also - if it does get caught in the rain - make sure it's dry at 400mm before closing it down to 100mm.

Light rain, yes. Like you can any other lens. But it's actually the least weatherproofed of any Canon lens and the friction control ring is damped by nothing more than fancy cardboard. It starts to fall apart if you soak it and abuse it, over time, but be sensible and no problem.

Mine got pretty wet a couple of times, but no worries at all. Just use the hood and do not pump the zoom when the barrel is wet, and it'll be fine. Wipe it dry, and when you get home pull it out to 400mm and let it dry overnight naturally.
 
The Canon 100-400L has a nickname the "dust pump", if it will let in dust, then it will let in water!;)

Same for me, in light rain I wrap a carrier bag or similar around my lens when walking about and depending on where and what I am shooting I also may be found cowering under an umbrella...:)
 
Rather than risk it getting damaged by water ingress in light rain, invest in a cheap Optech Rainsleeve cover, available from several places, which will protect your lens and body in light to medium rain. This seems to be cheapest on Ebay at the moment: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/120434559692
 
Aquatech! Used my 100-400 in heavy rain at Bempton last week thanks to the Aquatech rain/weather shield. Bril!
