Canon 100-400m lens is stiff to extend

Hi,

I have recently purchased a Canon 100-400mm lens, which is my first one, and the entending seems to be very stiff - I have turned the loostening "actuator", but it is still quite stiff. Anyone else have this issue and knows a resolution?
 
Not doubting your intelect or anything like that Neil but you are turning the actual ring part that has smooth and the arrows on it and NOT the rubberised ring next to it.

Is it a new lens as they can be a bit stiff to start with. Mine bough back last November has only just loosened up slightly.
 
Are there any little bits of what look like black paper or muck coming out between the lens body and the slide part ?

Are there any lines along the body of the lens ?
 
as above these are two seperate rins and need to be turned seperatly, one does the maual focus the other loosens and tightens the action

I know this sounds stupid but when looking for the same lens i popped into jessops and the guy did not have a clue as to how to get it to opperate, so me being technically minded had a look and figured it out, to say he was slightly embarrassed is an understatement but hey ho we all live and learne.

What an idiot I am - I was turning the focussing ring too. They are close together, so its easy to do.

Having turned the friction ring ONLY, the lens has become much looser. Really glad it was just me being a clutz.
