Are the older 100-400mm a darker 'off' white, browner tint compared to the newer whiter ones?
Or could it just be how some pictures are taken/lots of...muddy use?
 
As far as I am aware all the 100-400's have been then same colour, could be the processing ofthe shots you have seen or as you say they may have seen a lot of use.
 
All white L lenses are RAL9002 I believe, but like anything depending on use the pigment can change. Mine lives on a shelf so probably gets a bit of sunlight during the day so I would expect it to be a bit lighter then one thats been in a bag for all of eternity and only come out at night.
 
As far as Im aware they are the same colour, possibly discoloured due to age slightly, but they should carry a date code on them ...
 
I've got the 70-200mm f4 L and the 300mm f4 L and they are different colours, both less than 1 year old. I was surprised how different they are when I got them out together for the first time.

Hmm ok thanks.
Think I'm going to go for a 100-400 from MPB and px my current lens.
Looks nice a white'ish in the photos :)
 
this may not help you but my MkIII extender is lighter/brighter white than the 100-400 or MkII extender. Possibly the later paint has changed I do not know
