Canon 100-400mm, Nikon equivilant?

As it says on the tin really, is there any Nikon equivilant to Canons 100-400mm lens? I see the Canon coming in around £1200ish but the only thing I can see for Nikon is the 200-400mm that is not far off £5000!:eek:

Am I missing something here?:thinking:
 
The 80-400 VR is the most direct equivalent from Nikon, but it had a pretty bad reputation among most Nikon users (lack of silent wave focus, supposedly soft at 400mm wide open). The sigma 50-500 OS is Nikon mount is probably better competition.


Having said that, I do know a guy who uses an 80-400 and gets excellent results.
 
Thanks, I can't believe I missed that :D although on a quick look I don't think that's gonna auto focus on my d3100?

As for the Sigma, is the 150-500mm a better alternative? I have 55-200mm so I dn't really need it to go as low as 50mm.
 
Yeah, afraid it's a no go for auto focussing on a d3100. Bit of an obvious gap in nikons afs range right now.

Maybe take a look at the 300mm f4. It's a great lens and you could use a 1.4x converter if you need a little more reach.

There is also the 70-300vr which is excellent and quite cheap if 300mm is enough.

Nope, the 80-400 wouldn't AF.

The sigma 150-500 is also a very nice lens, great value, but the 50-500 is supposed to be a bit sharper.
Either will be a nice flexible supertele :)
 
OK, thanks guys, I'll look into the 50-500mm then, it won't be for a while yet but I like to know what I'm saving towards. If the 50-500mm is better I'd rather save for a bit longer :D
 
I've got the Sigma 150-500 and love it,there was a review in digital photo mag last month and it did really well, I've used mine more than any other lens and it cost £700 new but worth it!

Buy a D90 and you won't have that problem..... manual focus only on Nikon's entry level semi pro bodies because Nikon have moved away from focus motor's built into the camera bodies. 80-400mm doesn't have a focus motor.
 
I got a Sigma 150-500 OS Canon version and it's a cracking lens. I use it on both my 5D2 and 7D and while it needed a bit of MA on the 7D it's now very sharp on both. I use it more than my Canon 100-400 L now and it's certainly giving the Canon a good run in the IQ stakes. I bought it for airshows, mainly for the 5D2 (with the 100-400 going on the 7D) but I'm using it for wildlife and birds getting some practice.
