Hi everyone, I am considering buying a book to allow me to learn more about my Canon 1000D & get the best out of it.

So far, this one, The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion has caught my eye as it has a chapter in it about raw shooting, which I know nothing about & I wish to learn about this.

Here is the link to the amazon page where I intend to buy the book from.

Has any forum member bought the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion book & if so, what do you think of it, or would I be better off with the dummies guide or the field guide. I would like a book with a chapter on shooting in raw.

Thanks in advance.

There's not much to shooting in Raw - you just enable it, pretty much. It's all about the post-processing and what you can do with the file then. That's what you need to know a bit about.

Edit: you have Canon DPP which is a Raw processor programme that came free with your camera. It's very good, and has some unique lens aberration corrections  Full info on the CDs you have.

As hoppy said, shooting in RAW is no different to shooting in JPEG. It is just a better system as you have all the data the sensor recorded intact which allows you to change WB, exposure, bring out shadow detail, recover lost highlights etc.

Switch your camera to RAW, take a snap out of the window and then have a play around with it in Canon's DPP app and you will see the advantages over JPEG.

You can't really recover a bad photo (severely over/under exposed) but you can turn a good photo into a great photo a lot easier and quicker!

Have a look at the tutorial on this thread to see what is possible, this is for Adobe Camera Raw but the principles are the same.

Yeah, maybe I should have worded my post better.:cuckoo:

I think that I will still go for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion book, I feel that the book will help me understand my camera's functions better & I will regard this as a follow on from the manual. I am still a noob as you probably can tell!

Thanks for the advice & the tutorial link, I have bookmarked it for future reference.

If anyone could recommend a book from this page for a noob to follow on from the manual, I would be grateful. My Christmas money is burning a hole in my pocket!

I think you'd be better off getting a book on general DSLR photography. I stumbled upon this one the other day, by Will Cheung. Will knows his stuff and writes clearly (he lives in the same village as me :) ) and at least this book is up to date, many are not. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-SLR...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262089133&sr=1-1

I also rate John Hedgecoe's books. There are loads of them but The New Manual of Photography is good - very broad and comprehensive, but whatever you need to know is in there somewhere.

You might also take out a subscription to EOS Magazine, which often has articles about using DPP and other Canon-specific stuff that other mags don't cover. And check out the tutorials section on here - there's a lot of good reading down there.

The camera-specific books will be little more than an illustrated and elaborated version of the camera manual. I'm sure they're good, if that's what you want. The 'For Dummies' book comes out top if you arrange your selection by Best Selling.

Thanks Hoppy, I am thinking about buying the Will Cheung book you mentioned & one of the 1000d books to go with it.
