Yes
My Canon Eos 1000D was dropped and have just had a quote to fix it of £250 from Fixation in London. There is something wrong with both the body and lens. Am gutted. You can now buy this all for £399. Should I repair it...or put it towards something new? In an ideal world, I'd like Canon 50 Mark II...but too expensive at the moment. What should I do?????

You are going to have to pay the same amount to have it replaced with second hand equipment so it's up to you whether you want your own camera back or someone elses at the same price. Hard luck mate. This is probably a daft question but would it not be covered under your household insurance?

Well, it's only something you can answer really. How likely are you to get the 50D MkII in the near future? Having to repair/replace the 1000D is going to cut into those funds and delay it even further.

Perhaps pick up a used 1000D then resell it when you have the funds for the 50D?

Thanks - household insurance has £500 EXCESS on it so not worth it.
Aim was to buy new camera in about 3 months...just setting up new business...anyone recommend an intermediary step between what I have...and what I want. I think it's callled a compromise! Am considering buying second hand to get nearer to what I want!

I can't think of anything now but there is a couple of 40d's on the classifieds at £400 delivered and my 450d on at £280 delivered. Both are better than what you had but you'll have to buy lenses for both so maybe a 50mm f1.8 at about £60. Is there no-one near you that you could borrow a camera off for a while? Maybe another photographer has a second body he/she could lend you. Thats a hell of an excess for your insurance. Mind don't drop your tv or you'll have to fund half of your new one yourself.

I am using my Dad's 400D at the moment and luckily can use that for now. Will look into your suggestions. I need to get my head around the differences in the models.
Excess is massive - about to get sep insurance for business...but not sorted yet!

If your dad's cool with it, just see if you can borrow it until you can afford the 50D. That's what I'd do.

Cameralabs do good reviews and comparisons. Have a look there and see what takes your fancy within your price range. Good luck with your search.
