 i've said hello in the welcome section and gone into a few details about my problems but this is my first real post so please bear with me ;)

I will start by saying i'm totally new tothe world of slr's, so after much searching ect i decided the canon 1000d+18-55IS lens was a good starting place for me so i set about looking what deals are out there.

After seaching all over the web i came across canon-uk1 on ebay (please don't flame me for this i know many love and people hate ebay:lol:) after looking through there feedback and seing they sell under the canon name and is linked direct to canon uk i though it was as safe as any other outlet , they sell between 10 to 20 camera's everyday with good feedback of 50k plus.comes with 12 months warranty.
Here is a link to there listings

Sorry if this is not allowed, please delete if so.

Last week i won the 1000d and i received it on friday, did not have time open it until saturday afternoon as i was busy with work. This is where the problems began.Read the set up instructions , put in 2gb card and after the battery was charged i though great i'm ready for the world of photography and then.....

When i went to take my first picture the camers would not focus (half way down on the shutter button) the green light just kept blinkng and if i tried to take the picture nothing would happen.this was all done with AF on . tried indoors and outdoors in sunlight.

So then i turned the AF off , took the picture and got this message.

err01
communication between camera and lens is faulty
clean the lens contacts.

I get this everytime now with AF on or off , i have sent an email to canon-uk1 but as they are closed for the weekend i'm not expecting anything untill monday.

After searching the web i can see its not an uncommon problem and alot thinks its to do with a faulty IS.

So the latest is today i called into jessops just to ask for help and they were very helpful, they tried one of there lenses from the shop we used the same canon 18-55IS so i could eliminate the body , he took several picture with no error code so that proved the lens was faulty BUT all the images were out of focus all in full auto.
They tried several settings with the same results , he concluded both my lens and camera are faulty :'(

I have registered the camera with canon for the warranty and have a few numbers to call tomorrow.

Thanks for reading, any input would be greatly appreciated.
Not the start to slr ownership i wanted, but i'm sure i will get it sorted.

Rich.

Money back time and make sure they refund the return postage too as its a faulty product
Might be better to buy from a high st retailer and then any problems/ questions can be dealt with personally

Sounds like Jessops were very good in this case and maybe if you have a good branch return the favour by using them for a purchase

I have there number and will be ringing them first thing in the morning to see what they say , i want a refund or replacement .

Thanks for comments i'm trying to stay positive about it all but i was so disappointed when this all happened.
I hope its sorted soon as i'm off to ireland next week to see my god daughter she is only 11months and i wanted to get some good pictures of her for family and friends here in england.

Fingers crossed.

You are entitled to a refund or replacement.
The people you bought from are primarily refurbished units. In the most cases this shouldn't be a problem, and I am sorry you have had this experience. They are reasonably reputable, and so should understand the law.
As someone has suggested, perhaps you owe Jessops a favour for the service they gave, you (but don't let them take the ****).
If you haven't already found it, then use camerapricebuster (http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod1020.html)
Jessops do a price-matching service, but many people have found that acceptance of this can be a bit flakey. Apparently it is easier to get them to throw in a couple of extras, or very good deals on extras purchased at the same time. I don't know what to expect as extras, but accessories most people find useful in the first couple of outings would be spare batteries, spare CF cards and a bag.

BTW. in addition to the kit lens, the Canon 50mm/1.8 is usually somewhere between £60-£80, and is purported to be good at portraits of young-uns. It is sharp at around f/2.0 upwards I find. It might be too much if you are just starting out, but it is readily available at many places, and could be a good opportunity to use it.

Thanks for your input, i will know more on which way to go after i speak to them tomorrow.
If i do go for a refund i will be going back to jessops .

I knew the camera was classed as refurbished but after reading the details on this it can be as little as the box being marked or other small issues.I decided to go with it as i didn't want to spend £500+ only to find i'm no good at it
I will upgrade in the future if it turns out i'm ok,i like the look of the lens you mentioned , i only wish mine was working .

Good luck - and let us know how you get on :) It'll all work out in the end...

Welcome. Don't let this phase you. Just been unlucky there. I'd ask for a refund if it were me as well.

Good outcome. Jessops needs a few good sales right now - so you'll be a welcome customer. Try and get something extra for free! You might find they're quite flexible at the moment. (As they are just being transferred to partial bank ownership)

TBH this is actually quite a good start as now you know what photography is like. Everytime you select something and are careful to buy it at a good price, it will turn out that it's not as good as you were hoping it to be and you'll want something else!

*Latest*:)

Right after sorting out the refund of my faulty camera i set about getting another.

As some of you said i only thought it was fair that i give jessops a chance so i called into my local branch, there was only a young chap in the shop and no matter what i tried i was getting nothing out of him, all he said was if i can find a better price than the normal £399 then he would match it but i had to take in proof.

So i came home and searched using the link coldpenguin posted above , to cut a long story short there was 2 offer that i liked.
So i rang jessops to see if they could match either , all they said they could do was drop the price by a huge £1  so much for price match.

Would you believe the best deal was from comet of all places i now have a brand new

Canon EOS1000d +18-55 lens
Lowpro cirrus 140 camera bag (which i needed to get anyway)
Proline sdhc class 6 4GB card

All for £397, I have it home and all is working perfect.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for you help ,

.

did you get the IS or non IS lens with it ? :)

Glad you got sorted after your disappointment, but got to say in my opinion that the IS kit lens is a lot better than the older model

Daresay you will upgrade anyway so all that means is you won't get so much for it on Ebay or whatever

I found the staff in Adorama a lot friendlier than in B&H. They did me a really good deal on my 350D and bits. You should definitely check them out as well.

Glad you are sorted.
If it is the same lens as that which comes with the 400d, it is good enough to start with, and any working system is better than none!
Good luck with the photos

:thumbs:I will definitely pay them a visit .

Darren, don't get me started or i will buy one ;)

coldpenguin, its the same lens as i had with the first canon it just hasn't got IS but as you say a working one is better than nothing.

Wish you luck with the new camera - and hope you'll give us some example images at some point. Disappointing that Jessops didnt want to barter - if they keep it up - they might be gone by January!!

I Will put some pictures up when i've had some practice, jessops wouldn't move not even a free memory card, his words were " i can do the camera and lens for £398 and i'm only making 25p on that" yeh i'm sure . I really wanted them to have the business to as the staff at the other shop had been very helpful but it was an 80 mile round trip to them and only 10 to my local.

Well a few days on and all still working perfect;)

What do you think of this offer for two lens kit.

Thanks

Personally I wouldn't bother. You'll end up with several fairly average lenses IMO.

My advice is stick with what you've got and just keep using it. When you've taken loads of pics and got to grips with it all a bit more, then you'll probably realise what you need i.e. if you get in to wildlife or sports then you'll need a long lens, you might want some wide apertures or whatever. Then you can concentrate on that lens you need and buy the best you can at the time.

HTH.

Give it some time to work out what you would want from an extra lens.

You might well find an ultra-wide-angle (like 10-20mm) fits the bill, or perhaps a fast portrait prime like the 85mm f1.8 - who knows.
