feel the urge to buy one for macro work and also for portrate, although the portrate shoots could be very detailed, which i feel would get on ,y nerves after a while, been looking at a tog who takes picks of the celebs using one forgot his name :thinking::bang:


are they worth the dosh

Why would the portrait shots be any more 'detailed' on that lens at 100mm than any other? Just because it's a macro lens doesn't mean it will suddenly make the pores on their skin stand out any more!

Buy it, it's an excellent lens for both portrait and macro. Great colours.
 
Its by far one of the best lenses Ive ever used, both for portrait and macro. This includes the Nikon 24-70, 85 f/1.8, 70-200 f/2.8 and many more.

That lens alone almost made me stay with Canon, but I just couldnt get on with the bodies.
 
What about the new L version ? I know it is double the price, but it is a cracker....
 
I bought my 100mm macro about 4 weeks ago and I don't regret it - great lens! :)
 
I use it more than my 85/1.2 for portraits. Better AF, no restrictive minimum focus distance, IS helps and there is no temptation to shoot at silly wide apertures. Lovely contrast, colours and less CA.

Hi merc,

Great lens, used one for ages before switching and am looking again for one, great for portraits and a stunning macro lens, for £300 secondhand or just over £400 new you can't go wrong,

I bought the IS version for last summer best thing I ever did amazing lens:)
 
Is there an IS version as well as the L IS?
 
The IS is the L. The other one is just a standard non L. I had the L and it's the best lens I've ever used/owned.

Thats some major processing I would imagine. I can guarantee you wont get images like that straight out of the camera with the macro.
