Hi all, not posted for a while. I'm looking at buying the 100mm f/2.8 macro as I want a 1:1 macro lens and it always gets a great review and has a great reputation.

However I have just had a look and seen a Canon 100mm f/2, never heard of it before- does anyone have any experience and is it actually a true macro lens?

I'm guessing that as it is cheaper than the f/2.8 macro (completely different lens) it won't be any better, but I was just wondering.

Thanks!

It's not a macro lens, magnification goes nowhere near 1:1

yep, it's definitely not a macro lens, canon couldn't really price an f/2 100mm macro lower than a 100mm f/2.8 macro.

It's more of a portrait lens, and I think people often choose the 85mm f/1.8 instead of it for portraits, which is why it doesn't get that much discussion.

Thanks, I stumble across lenses like this every now and again which never get talked about and just sit there in the range somewhere, but if they were as good as they sounded then they wouldn't be so quiet would they!

I have the 100mm macro and although I haven't had the time to do much with it, it is a lovely lens.

I have the Canon 100mm f2 and it is a fab portrait lens, which gives lovely 'bokeh' .

However when most people want the 100mm one, then generally like you, they are after the Macro version.

Not necessarily. The 135mm f/2 L is absolutely awesome, but nobody seems to know about it.
