Canon 100mm f2.8L IS Macro lens

Hi all,

Very interested in buying one of these from a camera shop so can anyone give any feedback as to image quality / sharpness etc. I know it's a prime so IQ likely to be good but is the IS of much use at true macro 1:1 ?

One of the last lenses I purchased when I owned my Canon 5D2, it's a lovely lens it really is. I've since sold all my Canon gear, but here are a couple of shots from it:

IS is worth about 1 stop at 1:1 macro. 3+ stops at more reasonable distances.
 
The IS is genuinely useful on this lens at macro distances, unlike the Nikon version.
 
I want one. Just such a shame that I missed out on the Amazon deal from a few weeks ago. As I would of snapped one up now that I have money available.
 
I've got both the IS and non IS at the minute. The IS is fantastic for portrait photography and I've managed to do handheld at 1/15 on a crop. Not had chance to use it for macro yet but believe, like others have said, the IS will prove its worth.
 
Wow some lovely images but only viewing them on my iPhone 5. Lovely bokeh!

Colour looks lush, as does contrast. Think I will get one, especially with the £55 cash back factored in.

My fav lens perfect for macro and as already said the IS works at 1:1:)
Canon claim 2 stops at 1:1 probably not far off, I do find that I can get away without a tripod:)
very sharp and quick focus for a macro
think its rainproof too I have used it in very wet conditions but do use a raincover not sure if one is actually nessersary

I haven't used it in the rain but have a look HERE (3 minutes in). It looks water resistant to me!

just looked at that he's a braver man than me :D
(Poured a bottle of water over the lens fitted to a 5D)
Just had a look at the lens user manual its drip proof apparently:)
 
After the burglary at my place this is the last lens next to the "newly" bought 24-105. The IS is well worth the money, and the sharpness, well...some people might smack me for that but for me sometimes its just too sharp (portraits). You will see every tiny blemishes on the skin of your model.
But overall, a very good lens well worth the money.

Just looking at the sharpness, contrast and colours was enough to convince me. Breathtaking :nuts:

Hope to go out this weekend with it :D

Where did you purchase from? Make sure you come back here with some test shots! :)
 
I'm sure you'll love it, I got mine at the same time as a 100-400 L and the IQ I get from it is amazing. You might find you'll need to get some sort of lighting for it though as you need to shoot between f9-f11 to get a decent DOF. Some of the cheap LED ringflashes on Amazon are getting good reviews.

Here's one of mine taken with my 5D3 and 100 L, handheld and SOOC.
