...how much should I be looking for at getting a second hand one? tempted with the normal 100mm but now thinking about this. Cant seem to find a second hand one.

anyone seen a second hand selling price?

If you won't be using the IS, may I ask what the appeal is? The non-IS is incredibly sharp (haven't used the L version, so can't comment, but I can't see it being doubly sharp!). Is it the shiny red ring ;) :D

I can't speak for the non L as I haven't used it, but I wouldn't say the IS is what I love most about the 100mm - it's the amazing colour rendition and sharpness, I'm just processing a video I made today with the 100mm and it's just stunning. I'll link it when it's finished processing

Well I am assuming it be be superior to the non IS in other ways than just adding IS to it. Maybe not sharpness but in other image quality features. And yes, that red ring looks sexy!

Yes the link would be cool :-)

The L is sharper wide open but not noticeable at the usual macro apertures. The colour vibrancy is very definitely in the next division though and the IS is worth about 1 stop at 1:1....based on my copies of the two lenses.

first part is the 17-40 at 6400 ISO by the way, pretty impressed with that

35 seconds on is the 100mm - make sure you click 720p
