Hello all

I'm looking at getting the new canon 100mm Macro L is lens.
I've read that it can be used with Canons 1.4x TC and extension tubes like from kenko and canons own,
I was wondering what magnification would you be able to get and still stay practical? and what combo of tubes and TC again being practical would you be able to use?
I would use with canon 5d mk2 and mt-24ex handheld

I've got the 100mm Macro and you can't use any extenders on it.

No point really since you can use Kenko extension tubes and they give excellent results:

You can normally pick up a set of Kenko extension tubes on here S/H and save quite a bit of money - but you must get the DG AF version or autofocus etc won't work.

You can use the Kenko / Canon 1.4X on it giving 1.4:1 without any loss in working distance. - for the canon extender you need to use a tube also.

Is there a simple method of working out what magnifcation you get with different size tubes/tcs combos

I don't think the new 100L macro is compatible with Canon extenders - might be wrong but the old version wasn't. But it is with Kenko and I used a Kenko Pro 1.4x with the old non-L 100 and it worked very well for a bit more reach and/or magnification. Works fine with a set of Kenko tubes too.

I would say that's a good combo for up to maybe 2:1 but if you're serious about macro at even higher magnifications, the MP-E 65mm is the way to go.

double post - it's an automatic software feature after 4am

I would go woth the mp-e65 if your after just macro with the lens. Can't beat it.

unless you want the need to focus over 1:1 i.e infinity etc, as the mpe65 won't go past 1:1
