Have just taken delivery of a Canon 16-35 F4 IS and although its a pretty miserable grey day here took it for a quick spin.
First thoughts :
Nicely made with a black matt gunned type finish, stabilizer silent , the focusing mech does make a very small buzz but nothing terrible. zooming is smooth and well controlled. Size wise it feels very similar to my 24-105L and a lot sturdier and heavier than my 17-40L which came a cropper some years ago at a wedding.
The 17-40 suffered terribly at the sides and corners at F4 and in fact all the way through so was a bit of a nightmare for things like group shots so i never replaced it , having heard all the good things about the new 16-35 with its corrected edges etc decided to take the plunge as it will get used for the Commercial and Landscape work and pay for itself.
The following shots are not a scientific experiments simply real life photos , taken handheld with IS on and the focus is on spot on the front of the concrete pillar just to the center right of screen. There is some vignetting at F4 which disappears almost completely at f5.6. The crops are taken from the far right centre where the stones are.
All in all it performs a lot better than my other zooms ( 24-105, 17-40 ) and maybe is on a par with or just better than my prime 24 2.8 IS, the shots were all taken at the 35mm end as the reviews talked about that end being slightly worse than the 16mm end. Going to do some more at 16mm when i find a better subject and a nicer day ! anyway hope these make interesting viewing and no doubt i am going to get shouted at for not doing something right but I have only had the lens 2 hours
All in all with a quick tweek even at F4 a completely acceptable shot across the frame for me anyway.
