Canon 16-35 f4 or f2.8?

Looking to buy the above on a mk3 but cant make up my mind f2.8 or f4 version.
 
Unless you need the f2.8 the f4 has less distortion and better performance pretty much across the focal range
 
Ive done a lot of research on this over the last months as the same though is in my mind. The F4 comes out on top nearly everywhere I have looked. Sharper (and of course lighter!)
It's just the price thats a bit of a shock :-)
 
is the f4 sharper compared to the f2.8 stopped down to f4 ?

Noticeably Rob....it's more than adequate right into the corners, something that the f/2.8 never really achieves.

And the f/4 version has IS of course, taking hand-holding deep into normal tripod territory :thumbs:
 
Done a lot of research on this myself of late and the 16-35 was the one to have, so thats what ive got.
Its quite a LOT sharper in the outer areas than my 17-40 F4 L for sure.

That was the reason for my acquisition, Richard. I have two IR converted 5D2's and need to focus using Liveview (often without a tripod). The IS makes Liveview at 10x quite usable for typical landscape composition. I've recently added the 24-70/4 IS for the same reason....sadly it's nowhere near the same quality (optically) as the 16-35/4 and also falls short of the 24-70/2.8 MkII

It depends on what your photography is like - I use f2.8 L II version for wedding pictures and i love it!
 
It'd be hard not to be happy with it, Nick......despite it not being an overly glamorous lens it's very high in the value for money league.

Getting tempted by this now the price has dropped quite a bit. £765 and £80 cash back. So £685.
 
Love my F4. The IS is great. Unfortunately I bought mine from Wilkinsons when it first came onto the market, so it cost me £950! It was still well worth the cost, and I got a 3 year Canon warranty which includes a free hire lens from Wilkinsons if it needs to go away for repair
