I was looking to purchase a Canon 17-40 F4 L and was looking at the Hong Kong import sites like HDEW & Digital Rev thinking I would save some money. However I just noticed that there is £60 cash back offer running at the moment, so it is actually cheaper to buy a UK model from Amazon or WEX after cash back.

Just thought I would share that in case anyone else is considering the same.

Details here: http://www.canon.co.uk/autumncashback/

I've read that HDEW offer a receipt with UK VAT applied, maybe check with them if cashback would be eligible if purchased from them?

Too late for me; I have already ordered one. I got my 6D from HDEW though and I would use them again.

Enjoy your kit.
So do they provide a UK VAT invoice? Just asking as I've got no confirmation. Just heard this somewhere and thought I'd post here. :-)

My invoice is in the camera's box in the loft.

I am sure they will have charged VAT. I don't think that is the issue though. The cashback scheme is run by Canon UK so the lens needs to have been imported by them to give the discount. HDEW get them direct from Hong Kong, bypassing Canon UK which is why they are cheaper. It does mean you don't get a Canon UK warranty. HDEW provide their own 3 year warranty on most cameras.

I think the warranty on L series lenses is international though, so not such an issue.

Regarding cash back, this is in HDEWs FAQs page:

PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR NIKON AND CANON PRODUCTS DO NOT QUALIFY FOR NIKON UK OR CANON UK CASHBACK OFFERS OR OTHER PROMOTIONS WHICH NIKON OR CANON LIMIT TO SELECTED UK RETAILERS.

I've been thinking about buying either this lens or the 16-35 and the cashback offer is very tempting.

I have heard that Canon are looking to replace both though? If thats the case I may hold off. Does anyone know anything about these rumours?

If Canon do replace either of them you can add at least 25-30% to the current price (based on past examples). Whether that'd be worth it is upto you.

Considering the expected improvements, I would pay 40-50% increase over 17-40L high street price to get a new model.

It is just that it could still be a while to wait. A lot of people are waiting for 100-400 and cheap long primes replacement, and many cry for new 35/50L from Canon.
