Canon 17-40 f4 L or 17-55 f2.8 IS?

I'm looking for something in the wide zoom area for Canon 40D & 70D.

I'd been thinking of the 17-55 but worried about the high number of is issues people report and the 17-40 being f4. So looking for any advice / experiences etc

I'm not planning on going full frame etc any time soon :-)
 
I loved my 17-55 f/2.8. I bought it brand new right when they were first released, for a huge sum of money, and lost a lot on it when I sold it because I'd decided to go full frame (despite not planning to go full frame any time soon!). I experienced no issues with it.

You might want to consider the newer 16-35 f/4 - it's getting a lot of good reviews.
 
I no longer own any EF-S lenses but personally - with a 40D and 60D (and no plan to go full frame) I'd take the 17-55 f2.8 over the 17-40 f4 L all day long.

I would also check out the 15-85

Thanks that's reassuring! I looked at the 16—35 but it's out of the budget :-(

Cheers, hadn't considered the 15-85 because of the variable aperture but I'll give it some thought!

Whilst I have nearly bought this lens many times....
In answer to the original question 17-55 every time. Especially at the price it's available at nowadays (I too was an early adopter - but at least it's now paid for itself).

Cheers Phil, I was pretty much decided but I started hearing about issues with the IS and build quality so was then getting a bit concerned!

I think if you look around enough you'll hear about issues with almost everything :) I've never owned the 17-55 F2.8 but I can't say I've heard anything bad about it myself. I bought my 18-35mm at around Christmas and it's definitely an awesome lens but as Phil mentioned, the price is still a bit higher. Guess it depends if you want a bit more range/value for money or a faster lens!
 
The 17-55 is an ace lens, I love mine. Don't be put off by reports of dust - some such a little behind the front element but it it a risk free 5 min job to clean!

Lovely lens, best IQ on a crop you can get I think.
 
The 17-55 is a cracking lens. I did have the ribbon cable go on mine, bit didn't think twice about the repair.

As others have said, for the price they are now, they're a complete bargain.
