Hello Everybody, I'm amateur and just got the 70-200 f4 ( I love it), now the picture I take in the wide side with my 18-200 not so happy. I'm thinking to sell my 18 -200 and get me the 17-40. Am I making a good move. HELP me in taking the decision. Thank you.
 
You can't go far wrong with 2x L lenses, particularly if you are thinking to get 5D later on. If you are certain to stick with crop cameras for a distant future, there may be some more versatile alternatives, such as EF-S 15-85 IS, or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. I hope that helps.
 
You've duplicated a considerable part of the range with 18-200. That sort of zoom range is also going to involve an awful lot of optical compromise. If you want wide for landscape, the 17-40L is a good bet. As said, if you plan on full frame at any stage, buy EF lenses and not EF-S.
 
Been a few threads about this lately, including one from me and most of the answers where to stay away from the 17-40 on a crop camera and get the canon 17-55 f2.8.

I thought about this long and hard and to be fiar I thought the same as you, yes going to go FF in the future but how far into the futre is the question.
I have decided on the 17-55 and IF and WHEN i go FF I will just sell the lens and buy the 17-40.

I have hada 17-40L for coming up to 5yrs now and really like it. It's nearly always on my 40D and i personally wouldn't change to the 17-55. If i changed it would be for the 16-35. One of the main draws to the lens for me is the build quality which is vastly superior to the 17-55. Mine gets used and abused and has battle scars but is still going strong :)

+1... there are better alternatives than 17-40 for similar price range for a crop camera. Canon 17-55 or 15-85 (10-22 if you want uwa) or tamron 17-50...

if you decide to go full frame one day, you won't lose much when you sell your lenses (especially if you buy used).
