hi all im looking to upgrade my kit lens in the near future i have looked at the 17-40 and the 15-85 cant decide the 17-40 will be good if i decide to upgrade to full frame in the future and has a fixed f/4 aperture throughout. the 15-85 has better focal length but is 3.5-5.6

I have the Tamron 17-50 2.8 on my 7D, I like the wider aperture and couldn't afford a Canon. It does a great job as a walk around.

If you are thinking of going full frame in the near future then consider a Nikon 14-24mm zoom . You will loose auto-focus on your Canon body but who needs it at those short focal lengths, especially, if you are using it as a landscape lens.
You will need an adapter 'Nikon to Canon' fit as well.
Read the reviews of people using this lens on Canon bodies - Im sure it will make you think twice.

Hi

Do you need a constant F4 ?

Do you use the 40-85 mm range ?

if it's yes to either, then that is the lens to go for, personally, unless you are going to upgrade to full frame in the very near future, then I'd opt for the Canon 15-85 lens...
 
15-85. IS is fab on it....
 
I got the 17-40 F4L when I bought my 30D, and for quite a while it was my only lens. I still use it for about 75% of my photography, mostly landscapes and buildings. A lot of people dismiss the 17-40 on a crop body, but at it's wide end it's the equivalent of 28mm, which in my book is pretty wide. For times I need wider, I now have the 10-22mm EF-S.

However, if I was starting today, I would give the 15-85 EF-S serious consideration, since it looks like an ideal combination for most work in a crop sensor camera.
I've not seen a side by side comparison of IQ between the 15-85 and the 17-40, so I'm not sure how the resolution of the 15-85 holds up compared to the 17-40.
I've always found the results from the 17-40 are superb, really sharp with good contrast, colour and resolution, and the AF is so fast I sometimes force it to refocus because I missed it the first time.
 
The 15-85 is a great lens on the 7D.

Don't let the possibility of upgrading to FF affect your decision. As with any lens you can sell the 15-85 when and if you do upgrade.

i went with the 15-85 in the end very happy with it

I hear this all the time and its just strange. Buying a lens with a possible ff purchase in minds in the future means you have a unsuitable lens until you do. Buy a used now if you are worried then sell it for the same price you bought it for in the future when you do upgrade. Which is exactly what you have done by the looks.
