Canon 17-40 or Canon 24-105

Ok, in a few months I will be moving to a 5D MkII.
My main shooting preference is landscape and portrait work.
I'm trying to figure out which of the above lenses would benefit me the most.
The 17-40 sounds like a good bet for ultra wide angles but is obviously limited at the other end.
The 24-105 seems to have more flex ability beyond the 35mm range.

So what do you full frame guys prefer/have for landscape walkabout.
Alternatively what would you recommend?

In your shoes I would go for 17-40 and with the 200 pounds saved perhaps get a 85mm 1.8 or 100 2

I've got the 24-105 and it isn't really wide enough for a lot of landscape opportunities and not often fast enough for portraits. It does however make a very capable walk about lens.

I'm on a crop, but I'm also into landscape and portrait work.
I bought the 17-40 as its good for close ups and landscape. And on having a studio room 2x2 couldt have anything larger :lol:

If you want to pay for them then I will happily have both.

Hmmm I'm wondering if the 17-40 would be the best choice.
 
What about the 24-70mm f2.8 MKI, ideal lens for studio and landscapes on a full frame camera and 24mm not wide enough, :bonk::bonk::thinking: totally depends on how you compose and frame your images, but personally think 24mm wide enough for landscapes.

17-40mm f4 and 24-105mm f4 are abit slow for studio work, 24-105mm and ideal walkaround lens and the 17-40mm ideal for landscapes, but limited due to its focal length, so the 24-70mm meets you inbetween

Whats the going rate roughly for a Mk1 24-70 f2.8?
 
I use the 24-105 on my 5D2 95% of the time. I also shoot landscapes for 95% of the time. Only rarely have I felt I needed the 17-40.

Do you have a link to some of your landscape shots using the 24-105?
 
I shoot landscapes almost exclusively and use both 24-105 and 17-40, on a 5d mk3 and before that on a 1ds mk2. I use the 17-40 for many more shots than the 24-105 for landscape work but if I'm going travelling and want to take just 1 lens it is the 24-105 I take, it is very flexible, IS is handy, it has a good range and is lightweight. The only issue I have with it is some distortion at the wide end, most visible on seascapes where the horizon can be bowed but that is easily corrected.
 
24-70 has only 1 advantage over the 24-105 and that's 1 extra stop. For most practical purposes (and especially landscapes) that's not going to give you much - especially when the IS system of the 24-105 is quite useful for low light handhelds of static objects. That and the high ISO performance of the 5D2 is so good...

If you want a portrait lens, I'd suggest something like a 85mm 1.8. as well...
 
hi stuart i was in the same boat but i have gone for the 17 40 from kerso i spoke to him and u can get canon cash back on items as he gives uk invoice so 17 40 with cash back works out at £479 but if u want the 24 105 that comes out at £589 and £285 for the 85mm 1.8 :)
