Canon 17-40L or Not???

Ok,

I've read loads of threads on here, and am now ready to make my next significant purchase for an UWA lens.

I will be shooting digitally from a crop (40D) and film (50E) - I am comfortable that the focal lengths with the 17-40 on both will satisfy me (until I buy a 5DMKII).

My question is this - for the £555 that Martins Cameras advertise this lens for - is there a beter UWA lens that I should consider - in the same £ballpark ???

the 17-40 f4 L is a fantastic length, i just sold mine as on full frame i dont use anything wider than 24mm.

you can possibly save your self some cash by buying the lens from Kerso - hes a member here and offers good prices and outstanding customer service.
 
Sorry for slight derailing but what are the benefits of this lens say compared to the Canon EFS 18-55 f2.8? At f2.8 it would have better bokeh than a f4 lens?

Build and image quality.
 
Is the image quality that big of difference? Just wondering as many reviews seem to say the f2.8 is sharp.
 
There are reviews out there that place the better f2.8 small sensor zooms ahead of the 17-40 for IQ. But the 17-40 is FF compatible and many are attracted by the fact that it's an L.
 
The 17-40 is an excellent lens. Fairly light and with very good image quality. Also, when you get your 5DII it'll be even better. If you have the money, the L lenses are very worthwhile.
 
remember the 17-40 is not UWA on crop and from reviews I've read not particularly great on the 5D2

If you want to give the 17-40L a try, let me know and we can meet up somewhere and you take some shots with mine. :thumbs:

If you do go down the 5DII route this will be a belter, I love mine. Another alternative is the 16-35L but it`s about double the price. :shake:

If you are sticking with 1.6 crop, I have heard good things about the optical quality of the 17-55, if not the build quality.
 
Maybe I'm missing something here, but Fezman's original post said he wanted to also use this lens on a 50E film camera. In which case the 17-55mm isn't suitable at all.

Think the offer from Chilliz is very generous to let you have a try on his lens, or hire one for a weekend and see what you think.

If you just want an UWA lens for your crop body, then the Sigma 10-20mm is a very nice lens, certainly not as quick as the 2.8 you'd get with the 17-55, but it is genuinely ultra wide angle. & OK not quite the build quality of proper L series glass, but it's certainly better than the Canon 10-20mm
 
I had one and it is the perfect WA for a 1D camera with a 1.3 crop. For FF, I found I never needed wider than 24mm so it went.

I've now got a EFs 17-55 IS and reckon (on a crop) the image quality is as good as the 17-40.

For me, 17-40 is a good standard lens on a crop and gives you the option of UWA on FF. When I bought mine, I tested it back to back with a 16-35 (not MkII it wasn't out then) and the 17-40 was sharper.
 
I find the 17-40L a great walk around lens and it's surprising how close you can get with it -certainly butterflies and that sort of thing are well within it's capabilities.

Hiya Mate, it's all your fault :D when i got hold of your kit at YSP I wanted one, so just gone a selling stint, and now have the cash for the 17-40L. The next purchase will be the 5d2 - but gotta save for that.
